What type of liquor to serve?

FME, on March 10, 2017 at 8:02 AM Posted in Planning 0 24

I know this is a little soon but I want to start buying bits at a time so I can start accumulating for the wedding... We are providing our own alcohol to our venue. I only drink wine and FH barely drinks so we don't really know what to supply or what "brands" are preferred. It will be an open bar, so the bartender we hired provides the mixers/sodas/etc. I really am clueless here.

What beers would you suggest?

What liquor? I was thinking vodka and rum, any preferred brands? Anything else?

^ew I'm sorry but I want something a little better than boxed wine and coors light at a wedding. Peach snapps sounds gross, but I've never had it so I can't say anything about it. But that sounds like it wouldn't mix with much.

I just want to say I love this. You guys barely drink yet you're still hosting your guests properly. And I don't think at all it's too soon to start. Alcohol is so expensive. But only buy liquor now, beer can actually expire.

I agree with what heather said. I do think you should have tequila though, it's a staple and I know a lot of people that only drink it.

For beer I would do the usual suspects, like a bud, coors and then get some good beer like a lager, an IPA, stouts, some ales.

    @Heather thank you so much!

We for sure have the wine thing handled, my mom and FMIL and FSIL are wine fanatics so they volunteered to be in charge of that.

@Mrs S...It's funny you mention coors light because that's the only beer I can really tolerate because..well it doesn't really taste like beer. LOL...

I looked at beer options at ABC and became totally overwhelmed with lager, IPAs, stouts..literally no idea what the difference is!

@Melissa thank you! WW really changed my mind and helped educating me on hosting my guests properly. That's what we were thinking though, just buy a bottle of liquor here and there that way it's not a huge bill all at once!

I love my wine aslo. I know here in my state if you but a case or more you get a discount.Still see what the cost will be from a winery vs liquor store.

    I don't drink beer,maybe a sip her and there.

Heather's list sounds good. It would depend on your budget what brands you'll want. As a general rule of thumb, anything in a plastic bottle is probably hard to choke down. I drink girlier drinks so I would add fruit juices to Heather's list of mixes. I don't know much about beers etc but a keg is usually the best route. There are also premixed drinks you could buy.. but if you're not having a bartender those could get confusing sitting next to like the Bloody Mary mix that you add alcohol to..

Sometimes this can depend on your audience. I'm 100% Polish so there will be a lot of vodka. We'll have some Polish vodkas (Belvedere & Chopin) available but.... Absolut vodka is a popular choice across the board. I think you'll be fine with that.

FH is fake Irish- lol, I tease him about this all the time because he's like 12.5% and mostly Ukrainian but their family has taken on the Irish heritage.....so he picked Jameson, Tullamore Dew for his family.

We'll also have rum as well. Really don't know too much about rum but I think Captain Morgan is a safe choice.

I've never complained about having a drink in my hand though so anything you pick will be just fine Smiley smile Just sharing some ideas.

Thanks ladies, yeah I really don't want "cheap" liquor but I don't want a $100 bottle of rum either (do they get that expensive? idk) The venue doesn't allow kegs so we'll have to do bottles (or cans, but I feel like bottles are a little classier, idk)

I do know Captain Morgan, so that does sound like a safe choice. what about Jack Daniels?

Thanks so much Heather, i'm saving that information! I'll have to find out specifically what mixers the vendor includes (it just says mixers and sodas, so i'll make sure it includes juices and tonic water)

Heather, how many people are you having and how many bottles of each do you plan on getting? If you don't mind sharing

@heather- that's awesome advice! Haven't even thought to ask if they buy back what's unopened.

Ah heather you're totally my best friend right now, thank you so much. I'll have to look at places that I can return unused bottles to, I didn't want to under-buy and I didn't want to be stuck with 10 bottles of liquor I'll never touch.

I think I'm just going to steal your list and divide it in half since we're having 75 ish people!

Hold up. Please don't buy Captain Morgan. It's spiced, and that's not appropriate for all drinks. The safe (non-spiced) option for rum is Bacardi [Silver], but it's not that good.

For a dark rum that's good but not too expensive, definitely go with Meyer's. It's great in Rum & Coke and in most fruity rum drinks. For a light rum, get one that's aged. Try Cruzan or Flor de Cana, or maybe Appleton Estate (it might be way more expensive). If you only want to do one type of rum, I'd probably go with the dark rum. The disadvantage is that it makes drinks darker, which is weird in light-colored (e.g., pineapple or coconut) drinks. Dark rum is way tastier though, so I don't think it matters. Plus, most people drinking rum will probably be drinking Rum & Coke. If they see you're serving a tasty dark rum, rum lovers might also just drink it neat or on the rocks.

Jack Daniels is a fine whiskey choice, but it's kind of expensive. My whiskey-loving friends who like Jack tend to buy Jim Beam as a cheaper option. They also like Bulleit Rye Whiskey, though I do not know how that compares, price-wise.

For gin, I'd go with Tanqueray. If it's not [much] more expensive, do the Tanqueray Rangpur, since it's better in gin and tonic. Bombay Sapphire is also good, but has a very particular botanical flavor. For a cheaper option, go with Gordon's. (It's supposedly the Queen Elizabeth II's preferred brand...) I've also had New Amsterdam and it's okay. Do not buy Seagram's.

For vodka, I second the Absolut suggestion. Stoli (the actual name is way longer) and SKYY are also fine. You might want to consider doing a potato vodka or non-grain-based vodka if you have any guests who are really strictly gluten-free (like Celiac). Ciroc is a good option for this, since it is made from grapes(!) and is very, very smooth. Plus, the bottles are really pretty!

I'll post in a minute about beers.

ETA: More opinions and clarity. I got on desktop.

@Kate, thanks! I never thought about Sangria, that's a great idea! I'm in FL but we have ABC's down here

@Rayla, thanks for your input, I didn't even think about the gluten free option either, who knew, I'll have to look into a few gluten-free options too then

For beers, I would do your favorite one or two domestics (Bud Light, Miller Light, Coors Light, etc.). If you're in a state where it's popular (read: California), you could swap Corona Light for one of the domestics.

If you're in a state where it's available, definitely add Yeungling to the mix, since it's affordable and really tasty. People who gravitate toward craft beer would likely be happy with Yeungling.

To all this, I would add at least one craft beer if you think your crowd will want it. Samuel Adam's Boston Lager is a really safe choice, and most people like it. I'd also recommend Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. (You could offer it with the Boston Lager too, since they're different types of beer.) If you want to go further with the craft beer, I would add an IPA, then a blonde ale or a porter/stout (depending on if your group prefers light or dark beers). I second the suggestion to do something local (and if you tell us where you're located I/we might be able to suggest something)! When in doubt, though, Stone IPA is always sure to please.

If you are located in VA as PP guessed, Devil's Backbone Vienna Lager is really good. It's a light beer, so could stand in for the blonde ale suggested above (or swap it for the Sam Adams).

I would add that you should buy handles and not fifths.
