What type of fabric do I need to accomplish this look?

ladylee, on December 1, 2009 at 9:44 PM Posted in Planning 0 23

(Let's see if I post this pic correctly)

I know that's not organza and I don't think organza will drape the want I want it to. I'm thinking maybe it's a chiffon? I can't think of anything else to use for the draping. I absolutely do not want tulle and I don't know that organza would achieve the look.

It's hard to tell. I don't blame you on the tulle. It may be chiffon.

It can be Chiffon... another material that drapes well and will give you the same effect, but possibly more expensive is satin.

Hmmmmm satin could definitely work. but satin is going to be "shiny" and i don't know if i want that. keeping it in mind though.

It's definitely chiffon... probably silk chiffon to be exact but you can still pull it off with polly-chiffon which is cheaper. I would estimate about 3-4 yards per section according to this photo. Smiley smile

Oh, and you DEFINITELY don't want tule or organza... much too stiff to get this look.

    @libragurl lol that's fine.

    .

@cathasach ok here's chiffon i found on fabric.com. the description says it's 100% polyester and it can be used for decorating special occasions (among other things)

    .

Here's another they're calling "Nylon Chiffon". It's about $1.50 cheaper/yard but it looks rather stiff and looks more like organza.

    .

Off to look for a silk chiffon

I would stay away from the nylon chiffon... it will probably stretch which means your drapes could end up more on the floor instead of hovering like in the photo which could ruin the look of the drape.

Yeah i'm definitely feeling the first one over the nylon chiffon. i'm checking my notes and i know i measured the distance between the pews and the height but i must not have written it down. i'll have to go back. i really hate going when people are there b/c there are so many distractions. *sigh*

    .

ok so this will add up to be quite a bit of fabric but it's okay b/c this will essentially be IT for my ceremony decor. i really don't want flowers, MAYBE some bows at the top of the pews.

I would take the picture to a fabric store and see what they suggest and then buy it online. That way you can truly see how it looks and drapes.

Definitely go to the fabric store with it...and get out there and touch a bunch of fabrics. You can pretty much feel when something is going to be stiff and grab a handfull and scrunch it to see how it falls after. If it wrinkles...bad choice cuz that indicates stiffness. If it falls down as loosely as it did before...you have your silk chiffon body-double. There are so many imitation fabrics out there and you can def find something less expensive than chiffon, but you may have to get lucky to find less than $3.99 a yard depending on where you are.

And when you are draping things, take your measuring tape and measure the pews width and height. double your total and that's how much you will want for each pew. Good luck, and let me know if you have any q's. I did that before for another event.

The good news is that you can always re-sell the fabric when you are done! There's always a bride somewhere that may need it! Smiley winking

Oh i forgot about this thread. I think I found fabric that will work. Actually there's a couple of options that are relatively inexepensive. I just have to figure out how much to order to drape the pews and I'll also need draping for the altar. I'll post pics later.

Please consider making it fire retardant. It's not difficult to do. Rosco sells a fluid which you can dip fabric in. Not terribly expensive. Or you can find some fabric rated IFR (inherently flame retardant). Also, many florists and decor companies do this kind of work, so you could pay someone and not have a bunch of leftover fabric.

LenW, I do not plan to include the lighting or candles but thanks for the tip. I was very concerned about fire hazzard when I was deciding whether or not to have any type of lighting. But my wedding is at 11AM and the church has stained glass windows so we decided lighting really wouldn't serve any purpose.

    .

I have talked to a couple of people as far as the decorating and I've just been so disgusted. There is one other place that I'm considering but she has a showroom which is never open and that doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence. But maybe I'll look into a few more places before I decide to order the fabric. Thanks so much!

I would say chiffon by the way it drapes and it is dull rather than shiny. If you wanted shiny you could try a very lightweight satin - JoAnn's usually has it. You also might just go "touching" in a fabric store and compare fabrics for texture and drape.
