I am in the same boat here too so I am glad that you asked this question. Are you a member of the church? Is he charging you to marry there at the church? I am a member of my church and for that reason we are not being charged.

We are giving my pastor $100, he is not charging, we just thought that it's a nice gesture.

I was wondering the same thing.....we are members of our church. However or pastor is out on sabatical so the youth pastor is going to do our ceremony. This will be his first wedding. Maybe something to symbolize or mark that special occasion for him.

I think a handwritten thank you card and a monetary gift is great. Especially since some pastors do/will not accept payment. If money isn't an option, what about a nice gift certificate to a favorite restauran?t

    Great question!!!

I was on the phone earlier with a pastor & my mom asked him how much for him to do a ceremony for us (we not members of his church) & he told my mom not to worry about it.. But he will travel 2 hours to our venue to perform the ceremony, so I definitely want to give him something, just not sure what ... my mom said $200 is enough.. I was thinking like $300-$400...

The church where our ceremony is being held will be officiated by an associate of the church. His fee is included in the cost, however, FH and I have budgeted an additional $300 for him as a thank you.

My sister is a pastor. She asks for the same amount the couple is paying for the flowers.

You might ask the church staff what is customary.

@ Allison H. She'd be pretty dissapointed to do my wedding then. As our flowers will be about $200. & theres no %$&^ way Im tipping $200 for a 30 min service and a 30 min rehersal.

I knew our officiant very well - he is a great friend. He did our service for no charge, and I also knew he would not take a tip. However, I gave him $100 (my wedding was very small as was the budget) with a thank you note saying that if he would not accept this himself to donate it to his church for whatever project he saw fit.

A nice thank you note with a monetary gift of gift certificate is a good idea, You can also want to consider a donation to the church just a thought.

    Best of luck and congrats

Ours won't take any money so, I'm going to get them a $100 gift card to their favorite fancy restaurant and put it in a card as a thank you

Mrs. Smith, it's not an hour's worth of work. If you don't feel it's worth 200.00, well........then you don't. But please don't think that it's an hour's worth of work.

Mrs. Smith, there is a lot of time involved beyond a 30 minute rehearsal and a 30 minute ceremony. And the officiant is the only other thing you need besides a license.

My fee starts at $225 w/o rehearsal and $275 with rehearsal and I'm one of the less expensive professional officiants.
