What to do when you can't return something you don't like?

Laura, on March 16, 2013 at 6:02 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

I was wondering if anyone has some advice on how to return or try to sell something you bought for wedding but end up not liking. I bought a beautiful tiara from SecondIDo's.com but after I received I realized it really doesn't look right with my dress. There was not return slip in the package and when I went to their site I found out they have a strict no return policy.

It's brand new, I haven't even taken the tags off. I'd hate to lose $150 on something I'm not even going to wear : (

Aw, sorry. Your best best is to call and see if you could exchange. Maybe they will be understanding and let you use the store credit to buy something you like better, but I think if they have a strict no return policy that is the only good option open to you. Lets look together and see if we cant fin you something you like better, what is your dress going to look like? I dont know your style but I see a lot of beautiful choices and other things you could use the money for. Have you purchased gifts for parents and bridesmaids?

You can contact them about it first, see if you can return it.

If not, try Tradesy Weddings, the classifieds on Wedding Bee or Project Wedding, or EBay or Craigslist.

I sent an email and received a response from Julie who sent this link regarding their return policy:

I bought something off of preownedweddingdresses.com and had no issues. You could try to resell through there if you are not able to return it. Just explain your situation in the details.

Thanks everybody- I tried emailing already and read their policy. The part that makes me angry is that their "no return" policy was not stated anywhere when making the purchase. If I had known I probably wouldn't have ordered it just in case it didn't look right. I posted on Craigslist and Weddingbee- hopefully I can get something. What really gets me is it's BRAND NEW - just out of the box, never worn. That's what I get for impulse buying : (

You can post it on ruffledblog.com. They have A recycle your wedding section where you can buy/sell wedding items.

So get this! The response I got from (I'm guessing) the owner of this site SecondIDos:

"Our no return policy is to protect our customers from people who purchase an item, wear it for the weekend and then return it saying it was not what they wanted. Trust me…when we had a 14 day return policy, we received broken jewelry with hair caught in it (clearly worn), gowns with snags and broken zippers that were in perfect shape when shipped to them and even a flower basket and ring pillow (of course they kept the guestbook) that had stains on them on the bottoms….clearly sat in some liquid somewhere (wasn’t here)! We are certainly not in business this long being fraudulent or misleading. In fact, we are opening a retail store April 6th. We are more willing to work with a customer if they are respectful and not accusatory….."

Are you kidding me? I am so upset I'm dealing with this while trying to plan my big day. My whole point was that the "no return" policy was not clear at the point of purchase or even when I got my order confirmation. Am I overreacting? I mean I think that is horrible customer service.

Wow, that is INSANELY rude of them to call you accusatory! Your item clearly has tags on it and isn't used. There is no reason to act that way. I've worked online customer support long enough to know if I ever spoke that way to a customer/client I'd get in major trouble. What a jerk.

I would definitely give them a call and ask to speak with a manager or supervisor. Sometimes you can get places over the phone better than email. All of our products are personalized and therefore can't be resold, but customer satisfaction is very important to us and we work with all of our customers on this in each situation. $150 is a lot of money to be out. I would hope they will at least give you a credit to pick something else out. Good luck!

I do understand their situation, but accusing someone of being deceitful is not good for business.

If they are opening a store, I would contact them and see if you can either get a store credit or exchange it for something else.

Thanks everyone for the support- my main concern as a first time bride making purchases online is that I wasn't aware that most bridal places have a no refund/return policy. They never stated it at point of purchase or in my order confirmation. I'd happily return it and take a store credit. I work in customer service and I'm appalled by this response. I get it now that other brides have taken advantage of returns but how was supposed to know that? I'm not that type of person or that type of bride.
