What time is your ceremony & reception starting?

Donna, on January 6, 2020 at 9:49 AM Posted in Planning 1 15
I’m trying to decide my start times but I don’t want something too early or too late so people won’t stay. What time is your ceremony & reception starting?

Few questions... are you wanting a morning or afternoon wedding? Are your ceremony and reception taking place at the same location? If so, I recommend adding a "cocktail hour" directly after your ceremony to entertain your guests while you and FS take pictures. If not, I recommend no longer than a 2-hour interval between your ceremony and reception.

    Our schedule is:
    1st look & pics: 1 pm
Ceremony: 3 pmCocktail hour: 3:30 pmReception: 5 pmEnd time: 9 pmAfter party at nearby brewery
We talked to our photographer to figure out our schedule. She recommended starting our 30 minute ceremony about 1.5-2 hours before the sun sets so we can get golden hour pics during cocktail hour. The sun sets at about 4:40 pm at that time of year so that’s how we came up with our schedule. Also, we wanted the reception to end a bit earlier (9 pm versus the originally planned 10 pm) in case people aren’t staying over and want to get home.

Thanks! There’s one of our favorite breweries a mile down the street from the venue, so we’re just going to bus everyone who wants to go over. My FH and FFIL are the ones pushing for this idea but honestly I love it!
Plus knowing our friend group (and all the weddings we’ve been to together) we’re going to go out after anyway.

Our ceremony will be at 4 and reception starts at 6 with cocktail hour in between. We went with our end time of had to be done by 10 and cleaned up by 11 for a Sunday night. We get the venue for 6 hours for our reception contract so we worked our timeline out backwards. We will be getting there at 1:30 and getting ready. First look at 3:15!

We are shooting for a start time between 4pm and 5pm. We need to wrap up by 10pm, and our wedding is in late spring so the sunset is at 8:20pm. We wanted to have our guests eating at a reasonable hour and not start too early because we didn't want the light to be super harsh at our ceremony (which is outdoors). Our rough plan is 5pm ceremony, 5:30pm cocktail hour, 6:30pm dinner, and dancing starting around 7:30pm, but we will adjust a bit based on what our venue/caterer recommends to make sure there is ample time for everything and nothing feels rushed or drawn out.
