What Songs Are On Your "Do Not Play" List?

Lisa, on December 14, 2020 at 9:31 AM

I've seen quite a few posts about song suggestions, but not many about the other list the DJ asks for: the Do Not Play list. Did you have any songs you didn't want played at your wedding? If so, which ones are they, and why?

Beyonce, Mariah Carey and Taylor Swift are on our do not play list. Neither of us have special songs from previous relationships and there wouldn't be much left to choose from to dance to if that was the criteria along with anything triggering in general. There wouldn't be a reason to hire a dj or even have dancing with only a few songs left.

We're fine with whatever gets people dancing and the "cheesy" songs pack the dance floor. But I would still limit them to just a handful.

Very cool that your family is into the line dances! I feel like those are a "love it or hate it" thing, but they do always seem to get people out on the dance floor regardless!

It totally makes sense to skip the artists that you aren't a fan of! My fiance and I also like a good variety of music, so for the most part, we're fine with pretty much whatever gets played.

Having a DJ who knows what to play to get the crowd dancing while keeping the music enjoyable is definitely a plus! That's awesome that you didn't need to put together a Do Not Play list!

Nothing with too vulgar lyrics - there will be a lot of fairly conservative christian relatives and they will already be in enough shock at wine and beer - so no Cardi B LOL
I KNOW my girls are going to request Beastie Boys Brass Monkey and Sir Mix A Lot’s Big Butts so I have resigned myself to those two.
    And NO LINE DANCING.

My fiance and I are the same way, neither of us have any songs that are significant to a previous relationship, so our Do Not Play list will be fairly short. I agree to limit the the cheesy songs for sure! There's a few of them we're definitely planning to skip, but a couple we'll allow as well. If it gets people dancing, it's worth it!

Totally makes sense to either get the edited versions of the songs, or just skip them altogether!

We're banning all R. Kelly music (mainly because my dad will be our dj and he loves R. Kelly but we are very much against him) but that's it. I love watching people dance to songs like the Cha Cha Slide while drunk lol.

The line dance songs sure can be fun! They definitely get people out on the dance floor. There's a few I don't mind, but there are a lot that I want to avoid. Also, I think it makes sense to avoid the artists that you are not a fan of! Very cool that your dad will be your DJ! Hopefully he'll respect your request for no R. Kelly songs.

Totally agree with you on the Chicken Dance!! That's #1 on my list of songs to skip. I hadn't thought of the Hokey Pokey, I'll probably be adding that to my Do Not Play list too! What don't you like about Uptown Funk? I'm indifferent on that one.

I said no to Cotton Eyed Joe, anything by Taylor Swift )sorry to any fans on here but I just not one of them), no Macarena, nothing by Train, Lucky by Jason Mraz... I could go on. The typical songs that I really just think are over played for a wedding I said no to lol

We had all the usuals like Macarena, Electric Slide etc and I threw in Gangnam Style as well. We also said no Black Eyed Peas (just not a fan) and there was one Michael Buble song that we put on the list because it was friend's pick for her wedding, but the wedding didn't happen. And although I walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow we said no to the israel kamakawiwo'ole version because it had been used at a funeral we attended. Basically nothing cheesy or that would make people sad.

That was considerate of you to not play your friend's wedding song at your wedding! I agree with skipping sad or extremely cheesy songs. Many of the songs on your list are also on my Do Not Play list.
