What Songs Are On Your "Do Not Play" List?

Lisa, on December 14, 2020 at 9:31 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 37
I've seen quite a few posts about song suggestions, but not many about the other list the DJ asks for: the Do Not Play list.

Did you have any songs you didn't want played at your wedding? If so, which ones are they, and why?

We didn’t want any slow songs played that were significant in past relationships. We also avoided line dances like the electric slide.

That makes perfect sense about avoiding the songs significant in past relationships! I'm on the fence about the line dance songs. I personally want to skip them, but then again, I think about previous weddings I've attended, and the dance floor was (usually) crowded when those songs were played, so I'm wondering if we should let the DJ play them. Was there a reason you avoided them?

There's only one song I don't want to be played and it's significant to a past relationship of mine lol. Other than that, it's free game!

Oh regarding the previous post, we played a ton of line dance songs, and our photographer got the best photos/videos of us all dancing to it! Those were the songs that got our wedding crowd to actually get up and dance. We however didn’t have a “do not play” list! It was free game for us

No cheesy reception songs like the Cha Cha Slide, Mambo No.5, The Macarena, YMCA, the Chicken Dance song, Get Down Tonight, etc. And no Celine Dion, Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey 😖 (I would looooove to make a no Taylor Swift rule too.. but FH is a secret super fan 🤣)

Typically the "do not play" list is for songs that are significant in negative ways (previous relationships, remind you of something bad that happened in the past, etc) or songs you just cannot stand (certain line dances, "hit" songs that have been overplayed, etc). I don't think too many couples have a lot on this list, although if you worked in retail and your company made you play the same radio station/playlist all the time I could see there being a lot of songs you don't want played at your wedding.

How awesome that you got some great photos from it!! Sounds like everyone had a great time. That is a big part of why I feel like I shouldn't skip those songs - I feel like I've always seen the dance floor packed when those songs come on, likely because most people know the dances that go with them!

Most of those are all ones I'm wanting to skip at my wedding too, especially the Chicken Dance!!! I think that one takes spot #1 on the Do Not Play list. One of our wedding party members is a huge Whitney Houston fan, and I'm pretty sure a song or two will be requested. Too funny about your FH being a super Taylor Swift fan! 😆 I learned recently that my fiance really likes some of her songs (her music is the complete opposite of what he normally listens to), though I don't think he's at the super fan level (to my knowledge), lol.

Right?! They’re just soooooo cheesy, and I’ve heard them played at like Every. Single. Wedding.

Taylor Swift... I found out fiancé is a fan when a video surfaced of him and 3 other guys from his work (mind you, these are all tall, burly, “manly” dudes that operate heavy equipment) singing and dancing along to Shake It Off 😂😂

The only song we had on our Do Not Play List was Benny and the Jets. My husband's name is Benjamin or Ben for short, but he hates the nickname Benny. He knew his friends would try to request it so he specifically told the DJ not to play it. I see Taylor Swift is mentioned and I'm a huge fan, but I'm sure my husband would've liked having her on the Do Not Play List, but he knew better than to even ask.

We did lone dances! My family is very Into those, so they were on my list of songs to play, lol.
Our do not play list I think only consisted of “I want it that way” I’m a huge Backstreet Boys and that song is so over played that if I didn’t list it I knew he’d play it.

I agree that the Do Not Play list is usually fairly short or nonexistent! There aren't too many songs that we're planning to skip, but some of them (such as, the Chicken Dance), I'd really rather not hear. I think our issue right now is putting too many songs on the Must Play list, instead of having too many on the Do Not Play list!

That makes sense! I totally agree with avoiding artists that you don't support.

We are 80s kids, and mostly LOVE the music from that era. However, there are some bands I told FH I could not stand, and don't want them played at the wedding. They are: Tears for Fears, Depeche Mode and Flock of Seagulls. Anything else is pretty much fine. We like all different kinds of music.

And, as cheesy as it may be, I'm one of those weird people who LOVE the Chicken Dance! idk why. It's cute.

We didn't make a do not play list! Our DJ is a family friend and have DJ'd many events before so he knows what to play.

I can totally understand why your husband wouldn't want that song played! Smart idea to let the DJ know to skip it, regardless of whether it's requested or not. I don't have Taylor Swift on my Do Not Play list (I'm indifferent on her music, I don't really listen to that genre, but I don't despise it), though I had thought for sure my fiance would put it on his Do Not Play list, since that genre is the complete opposite of what he normally listens to. I was shocked to find out that he instead likes some of her music! I never would have guessed.
