What should the Koumbara wear?

Meagen, on January 5, 2017 at 11:09 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

My fiancé is Greek Orthodox and I'm in the process of converting. I'm not sure what the Koumbara (FH's SIL) should wear! I'd like it to just be a bridesmaid dress, but is that how it's typically done?

    Per google:

ETA: can't you ask his family what's expected or traditional?

The last two Orthodox weddings I went to, the Koumbaras were BMs so they were in BM dresses. I think it's just a preference.

Thanks Linds, I hit google. But the more links you click, the more (and varying) answers I found! Smiley winking

Also, yes, I can ask his family. But sometimes it gets wearing to ask the same people hundreds of questions. It's nice to be able to turn somewhere else sometimes.

No advice on this but wanted to chime in and say hi because I'm also marrying a Greek man in October 2017! We are doing an interfaith ceremony (technically not covered by Greek church) as I am Jewish and not converting. We will be having a rabbi for the Jewish portion, and an interfaith minister with koumbaro for the Greek Orthodox part. I believe the koumbaro will be wearing the same suit as the other groomsmen.

Hello back at you, SuperShani! That sounds interesting - thanks for sharing about the koumbaro. There are a LOT of rules for a tradition Greek orthodox service, and it's hard to keep track!

@meagan god bless you for trying to keep up! I'm Greek Orthodox but decided no way could I do a traditional church wedding! Plus my FH is catholic so we're not getting married in a church at all. Goodluck!

I just asked my mom and she said: "If the koumbara isn't a bridesmaid or groomsman, she should just wear a dress that possibly blends with the maids, but not the same since she's not a bridesmaid. I've usually only seen a koumbara that's in the wedding party."

I'm Greek orthodox but FH isn't so we're having a non-denominational ceremony. From what I've seen, the Koumbara wears bridesmaid dress. My sister got married in Greece in the village my dad is from and her Koumbara wore a nice pant set. In Greece, they wear whatever they want. I think in the states, a bridesmaid dress is the best option.

We are date twins and both getting married in the Greek Orthodox church! Woo! My brother is our koumbaro, and also a groomsmen, so he will be wearing what all the other groomsmen wear. If your koumbara/o is not part of the wedding party, I would have them at least matching them in color and type of outfit. They have a pretty central role and will definitely be on display! Good luck! 6 months and counting!

Thanks, Diana! What a coincidence! Happy almost-six months. Haha. We ended up having them just match the rest of the wedding party, which they are fine with, much to the chagrin of my FILs. Haha
