what should my personal attendant wear

MNBride2010, on November 14, 2009 at 11:32 PM Posted in Planning 1 9

We're having a small bridal party (3 on each side) so I asked a girlfriend who just missed out on being a bridesmaid to be my personal attendant. I honestly don't know much about weddings (but am learning a lot quickly of course!) and am wondering if it's appropriate for her to wear the same dress as the bridesmaids (or same dress in opposite colors-they are two toned). We will be having ushers that are not groomsmen that I think will wear matching tuxes, so I was thinking my personal attendant wearing the same dress would work too, but not sure. I am leaving it up to her whether or not she wants to spend the money, but she doesn't know either if she should match w/o standing up at the ceremony.

Lol. It's YOUR wedding. If you don't mind, then go for it. Remember, you're doing this for you and your partner, not for everyone else.

    Good luck!!!

Thanks for that reminder! Sometimes it is so easy to get caught up in what is "expected" or "tradition." I think I will leave it up to my personal attendant as I want her to be comfortable at my wedding!

Yeah I know what you mean. I go back and forth between worrying over what's "expected" and remembering that it's not a show, it's my day. lol. You're not alone in that one. And I highly doubt you and I are the only ones either. Sooo many forum posts I've read, and I'm just like, "Why would you even care what everyone else says? Do what you like."

It's actually pretty liberating, this whole wedding business. Hehe. Because for once in you're life, you're allowed to put your foot down and say, "No! THIS is how it's gonna be!" Hahaha!

Well in the weddings i have seen the attendants wear same dress with opposite colors, and they dont walk up, niether do the ushers, but the attendant gets to be in the photos so you will want her in a dress, but its up to you. if you need some help planning your wedding, im just starting up my wedding planning business, and im really cheap and i can make it very easy for you to just enjoy your day, i can get you great deals as well

Often I've seen where they try to match or compliment the color scheme just like the Mom's try to do as well, but pick out their own outfit to wear.

The Potters, um honestly I'm not quite all that sure lol. I didn't know about personal attendants until my mom suggested I have one. She had her cousin and said she was just there with safety pins and bobby pins and other "emergency" items. I think what the personal attendants duties are really varies. I think I'll have my personal attendant help me get into my dress and laced up and all that good stuff. Basically she's a really close friend that I guess you could say was "next on the list" to be a BM, but we wanted a small wedding party. This way I can make sure she gets to share in all the moments of when I'm getting ready and can hang out w/me and the girls the whole day! She had previously offered to help out with things so this way she gets some recognition. I know that's not a good description but that's about all I have for now.

Ladies, if you are hiring a PA, she usually wears something along the lines of business casual with comfortable shoes as she's running around and getting down and on the floor, etc. MNBride has the right idea of what a PA does, we handle all the emergency situations no one else logistically can. I roll around a compartmentalized bag with all the essentials the Bride may need. So far, all of my brides (and brides-maids) have been very happy that I was there to handle the unforseen. Smiley smile
