What should I expect from my Davids Bridal Appointment?

Amber, on April 10, 2014 at 4:38 AM Posted in Planning 0 24

Finally made a appointment! I know what your thinking your getting married in AUG and dont have a dress yet??? Well finally dropped 30lbs and 4 pants sizes, so I'm feeling much more confident!

Bringing my Mother, Grandmother, Aunt & FMIL with me.

What should I expect? I'm not a girlie-girl. I can't tell you you last time I put on a dress, so its going to be pretty awkward for me! Been to DB several times, and got some ideas of what I'm interested in buying.

Should I wear my wedding shoes? Have my hair styled? All Make-Up?

Congratulations on the weight loss, that's awesome! I think you have plenty of time to find a dress. Take your wedding shoes with you so you can see how much the dress needs to be altered, length-wise. I would skip make-up and doing hair because it'll probably get pretty messed up, getting into and out of dresses and you wouldn't want to get make-up smudges on all that pretty white Smiley smile And bring some water and a snack, trying on lots of dresses can get tiring! Have fun!

Thank you!! These are my shoes, I'm sure they will go with everything they are flats and I'm short so alterations for my shortness will be a must. I'm worried about them dirty (then again, I'm having my wedding in the woods so eventually they will be dirty lol)

I actually preferred to go in with my hair looking decent and a little makeup, I wanted to get a more complete look. If I don't wear just a little makeup I feel kind of blah when I look in the mirror so depending how you are you might want to do a little bit. A strapless bra might be good, but they gave me some undergarments to wear too. I definitely think water is important to bring, there's a lot of excitement so just remember to breathe. Don't feel pressure to find a dress on the first try or try and get like 10 dresses on in one appointment, stay relaxed.

My experience at DB wasn't all that great, I came in with pictures of dresses to try on and she didn't even take me around the store to show me some different dresses, she just started pulling dresses. While she got my dressing room ready my sister ended up showing me the different dresses (she recently got married) and then my attendant grabbed me away to start trying on dresses. She didn't even let me finish looking, she was more concerned on just getting me in and out of dresses. It turned out that while she was getting my dressing room set up I found a gorgeous dress on the rack that I hadn't seen online and it ended up being one of my top favorites. So make sure you take your time looking at the dresses. My attendant also kept leaving, so my sister ended up giving me sashes to try and veils, etc. so make sure you ask your attendant to see what dresses would look like with a sash and try dressing it up, it might really sell you on the dress! Everyone has a different experience, my sister went to the same exact store and had a lovely time, so I hope that is your case!

Congrats on losing all that weight too, can't wait to see what you choose!

I'm hoping that helps, everytime I have been there they have been pretty nice. I'm a little worried because of their sale at the moment I wont find what I liked before. I'm going the last day of the sale I think

Retail mirrors always BLAH me out... lol I feel lovely at home but when I look at clothing store mirrors im like EWW WHY

If you go when it's busy- like a weekend they will introduce themselves, ask your date, comment how you waited too long and might have to rush order. Then they will grab any dresses you special requests. Otherwise they will pull a few based on your preferences. They will go help other brides while you and a family member get the dresses on. They will check in to see what you like and don't like and bring more dresses. I hated it because they stress you into buying and don't spend the one on one time with you.

Congrats on the weight loss. DB sales people work on commission and are assigned multiple brides at a time. Understand that going into the appt and you will be fine. Be open to trying on different styles. My first thought was a lace overlay, but they weren't flattering on me. I didn't want strapless but ultimately ended up with one.

Yes, thats what most people are telling me - don't go in with just set idea on a dress. Thats why I'm bringing experienced women with me instead of my girlfriends. lol I trust their opinions rather then sale associates, they know me better.

Sadly, it is a saturday date.

Personally, I wasn't happy with my experience at David's Bridal. Although I'm told my experience was atypical, so here's what you SHOULDN'T expect. I walked in and had to wait 20 mins after my apt time. Then a lady finally came out and essentially pointed to the dresses and said well there they are, go pick some out. Then I picked out and tried on dresses completely by myself with no help. She came and checked on me twice and I tried on 8 dresses. My only advice is bring a strapless bra with you.

Don't walk in thinking it will be like "Say Yes to the Dress" simply because A) it's a chain store B) the consultants are usually juggling multiple brides and C) the selection is more limited. As long as you keep that in mind you should be fine. My appointment was average and my friends ended up pulling and putting me into dress because the girl who was supposed to be helping me was overwhelmed by two other very demanding brides so I let her be until the end when I needed her to close the sale. *shrug*

I would go dolled up, it helps you feel prettier and you get a better idea of what the dress will look like day of. Bring any and all accessories you plan on wearing as well.

Good luck! And congrats on the weight loss, that is a huge accomplishment!

Congratulations!! Don't worry about the August thing. :-) Mine is in Sept. and I just re-ordered last weekend and was told it would be in next month. You've got a little wiggle room.

If you can, try to schedule your appt. during the week - maybe even during the day to avoid evenings/weekends. Not only do they take appts., but there are walk-ins as well and they get assigned to consultants who may already be working with other brides - which tends to be much worse on a weekend/night. Look online at their dresses and write down the style #s of the dresses you think might want to try on, but be willing to go with a suggestion or two outside the box. I never had the experience that they were rushing me out of dresses, but I'm a take-charge kind of person. Rather than wait if they went to help someone else, I'd just start getting myself into the next dress. I also didn't worry too much about accessories at the first appt., either.

Keep in mind that sometimes, having too many people weighing in with opinions can get you confused about what you like vs. what they like. Because in the end, it's all about how YOU feel and look in the dress.

    Good luck!!

I'm starting to think I'm the only one who didn't have a horrible time at DB. I'm very low maintenance and my sis in law is very adamant about what she wants so I took her with me to make sure we got the right dresses pulled. The ladies were helpful and funny, didn't bother me too much, gave me time with my girls to really make a solid decision. The only thing that drives me nuts (as I'm sure it does everybody else) was the pressure to buy all the accessories and the credit card etc. I just tell them no right away and that I'm only looking at dresses. Not interested in anything else. I mean, it's not a full on fancy bridal salon, so you can't expect much. It's basically a retail store with wedding dresses. I went totally scrubby the first time and then a little bit better when I picked up my dress. I brought my shoes the second time (didn't have them the first time) and tried on like 45 different veils and sashes. Just have to be firm and not give in to their sales tactics.

I went on thier website and picked out some dresses that I liked some they had and some they didnt . I actually didnt like any that I picked out but as the process went on I learned what part of the dress I liked and what I didnt and my consultant said wait a min and went and took all my advice and picked me out a dress that I loved and I wound up ordering . They put you in undergarments so having the right strapless bra dont really matter at this point . I did buy the bra they used because I knew it fit perfectly with the dress but held out on anything else . I loved the veil and took a pic of the price tag on my phone so if I dont find another one I have the stock numbers but good luck and remember to have fun and as my mother always says what it looks like on the hanger is different than how it will look on you and I have to admit she was right this time .

Do they measure you for size? I have no idea what size of dress I would wear

I went to two different DB's and had two diffrent experiences. 1st one was okay not great. Consultant was way too busy. But I still narrowed it down to a few dresses. I made an appt. for a weekday and had a totally different experience. My consultant was great! She not only brought me what I had narrowed down but a few others. Keep an open mind. Also keep in mind that the veils, head pieces and other bling can usually be bought on-line or elsewhere a lot cheaper!! I just ordered my veil for $22.00 and it looks like the one I tried on at DB for $150.00. Good luck and most importantly have fun!!

Don't stress too much about your dress size. It WILL be bigger than you expected. I wear a size 6 pants and was trying on size 10 & 12 dresses. The reason is that you want the dress to fit the largest part of you and then they alter accordingly after. Your hips might fit a size 8 but your boobs are a size 12 or vice versa.

David's Bridal is great for keeping to a budget...not great for anything else. Like another commenter said, if it's a weekend, expect to wait 20-30 minutes for your appointment (and in a line) then to be helped very little. Little kids running around everywhere, other customers being rude to you. Ugh. It's a nightmare. Hopefully it's better wherever you are.... I ordered my girl's bridesmaids dresses from there because I know they have some of the best prices and I figured they have the best selection, but EVERY SINGLE ONE of my bridesmaids had to return their dresses and get a larger size and they ordered in the SIZE THEY TRIED IN THE STORE AND IT HAD FIT.

I have heard lots of different experiences, like the ones above. However, mine was AMAZING!!! Right away my person that helped me asked if I had a budget and what I like in a dress and what I hate. I told him that I hate strapless, love lace, and want something that flatters my pear shape and that I want to stay under $400 if possible!!! So he brought me 8 dresses that ranged in all shades of white including lace, beading, etc. You name it. I picked out 4 that I liked and while we waited for the bridesmaids to look at dresses for the second appointment he had me put the dresses in the order of how I like the 4 I chose. He had me stay in my #1 choice and he braided my hair and asked about the wedding while the BMs looked. It was wonderful. My second appointment he pulled those four back out and asked me to browse with him. So back to 8 more dresses and I tried the previous 4 and new 4 on. I found my dress that day. My #2 dress eventually became my #1 and I tried it on 3 different times that day. I loved my experience. I hope yours is as good.

PS.. LOVE LOVE LOVE your shoes. I have been looking for those around here!

Ps... I would definately look online and make a favorite list. I did and it helped my person help me find things to my taste. Don't worry about not knowing your size. I am a size 15 and my dress is an 18, but they said that they will take it in at altering.

the style I went with is: Style 9V3398

Mine was great and specifically asked the consultant if she worked on commission so if i went to a different store to get the dress she would still get the credit for selling it to me. She had one other bride besides me but still helped me get in and out of the dresses. and made sure I was taken care of.

I would suggest maybe wearing your hair in a ponytail or something in case you try on veils it helps to get the comb to stay in the hair.
