What is too young for a maid of honor?

Hailee , on March 11, 2018 at 10:46 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9
I decided long ago that if I ever got married, my youngest sister would be my maid of honor. I am not at all close with my other siblings, and my friends have become distant. Literally the only other bridesmaid I’m having is my soon to be step daughter. Thing is, by the time my wedding rolls around in two years, my sister will only be seventeen years old. Is that too young? There really isn’t anyone else I want to have as my maid of honor, and she’s perfectly capable of doing most of the maid of honor duties. But would she be able to sign my marriage license as witness?

Choose your sister. There is no reason she can't be your MOH. There are no duties for any MOH, other than to be as supportive as they can, and show up in the dress.

Whether or not she can sign as a witness, depends on the laws where you will be married. Even if she can't legally be a witness, it's not a reason to exclude her from the position. Someone else can sign.

Since the only duty of a maid of honor is to buy the dress and stand by you on your wedding day, I'm sure your sister is more than capable of doing that and it would be a great honor for her.

Go for it! There is no rule on age for something like this; it is a very personal decision and if she is the person that you envision standing up there with you on your big day, then that is exactly who you should choose! If she can’t sign as a witness, just ask a parent or relative to step in who can. Smiley smile

It's fine, as long as she can handle the responsibilities of being the MOH.
