This is my second wedding, but I think I may have wedding amnesia! I don't remember things costing so much 15 years ago. I went for my first fitting this morning and although they are doing a lot to my dress, hem 2 layers, shortening straps, adding material to the straps to help with skin irritation and adding a bustle - it seems pricey. There really is not much I can do but suck it up. I did price around and these ladies are comparable to everyone I have been in touch with AND they actually know what they are doing, which I can't say about everyone I talked to. $600 to alter my dress. Have you ladies been quoted around the same?

Mine were about $550 and I think I got a steal. If you look on my profile you'll see how much I changed my dress.

I added corset/bra shape wear that will be sewn into the dress. My dress also had lace going up to the neck. During my first alteration appointment I decided I no longer liked that. So she chopped off the lace and made it a sweetheart neckline.

She is taking up the dress significantly since I'm so short (5ft) and it's a lace dress.

She's adding satin buttons to the back and a bustle.

I know it's a lot of money and my FH definitely had sticker shock when I told him the price. But for what I'm getting, I'm pleased with the price.

I had mine let out 2 inches in the bust, changed to a sweetheart neckline and added a bustle that included 12 loops and buttons and it was $260 for everything. My dress was purchased from David's Bridal and they are the ones who did the alterations as well.

I was quoted $250 for just a bustle (only thing needed, had custom sizing when I ordered the dress). I decided against paying that for a few buttons, and am instead having my sister put in the bustle. She's a pretty skilled seamstress and has put in bustles on 2 other wedding dresses.

If you’re willing to travel to the ‘burbs I have a fantastic tailor in Huntingdon Valley called La Difference. You can contact them on Yelp. Super afford and SUPER quick. They’re so meticulous too. I got a slight hem, straps shortened, bustle, cups put in, the top taken in, and the belt appliqué sewn on and it was $235

It depends where you are. Prices can vary significantly depending on the area. In NYC a lot of bridal stores charge flat alterations fee of $600-$800 typically. You pay that no matter if you need 1 or 10 changes, which I find absurd. If you go to an independent seamstress you might pay little less.

Mine is about $180 for the bustle but they will need to resize the boob part and shorten the straps so it may be like 300-400 at David’s bridal

My alterations were $800. I did 5 layers of hem, had the straps shortened which involved taking off all the pieces of lace and reattaching them, had the underskirt shortened and reshaped, and had a bustle with 7 points. I did think it was steep but I wanted the best seamstress I could find and in the long run I’m happy I paid that price for the amazing work she did. She even taught me how to turn, sit, and woosh the train of my dress!
