What is the cost of your alterations?

Ginger, on May 4, 2019 at 1:46 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 33
This is my second wedding, but I think I may have wedding amnesia! I don't remember things costing so much 15 years ago. I went for my first fitting this morning and although they are doing a lot to my dress, hem 2 layers, shortening straps, adding material to the straps to help with skin irritation and adding a bustle - it seems pricey. There really is not much I can do but suck it up. I did price around and these ladies are comparable to everyone I have been in touch with AND they actually know what they are doing, which I can't say about everyone I talked to. $600 to alter my dress. Have you ladies been quoted around the same?

I paid $495 for alterations which I thought was on the low side for everything that needed to be done to it.

I got a quote for $400, for heavy alterations to the bodice, lining the bodice, heming 5 layers.

Get another quote, see where it comes out to be.

My hem was $80 and my bustle was $30. I have an a-line with multiple layers too. Considering adding cap sleeves but that's $250 for the sleeves themselves. Yikes

My alterations were $125. They had to make it bigger so I could fit into it in the chest area.

I haven’t gotten an official quote yet, but I was told by the alterations manager that $500 is their average. I’m hoping all mine will need is a hem and bustle...possibly taken in at the bust.

I’ve never understood alterations being so expensive. My shop does alterations for free for the bride and bridesmaids if you buy your dress there. And they do beautiful work. I’m sorry that it’s so expensive!

$400 for sewing in cups, bringing in the back and sides, and an American-french combo bustle. I was surprised in a good way as I expected it to be much more expensive. Love the PP who said their shop does it for free, that is fantastic!!

That sounds about right compared. The hem and bustle were the most expensive part for me too. Everything else wasn’t much for each individual thing but it really adds up fast. If you’re happy with the seamstress and confident in her abilities though that’s the most important thing!

This seems to be a fair price to me, depending on where you live. Remember, seamstresses charge by the hour, and for skilled alterations like yours $60/hour is really a deal. Remember, it’s minimum wage plus store rent, materials, and a little profit for themselves. I had to buy my dress last minute at a sample sale (long story) and it was two sizes too big, plus we had to add some fabric to make the dress bra friendly, do some minor repairs, chop off the train, etc. The total was $895, which for Manhattan was shockingly cheap. That dress was easily 30-40 hours of work, the only way they could get away with charging so little is maybe they own the building or something.

I paid for the hem-$170, adjusting sides + boning of bodice-$100, attaching straps-$20, & taxes were $24 so the total was $314.

I’m still having trouble finding a seamstress in Philly. I’ve contacted 3 and they are booked up until the end of September Smiley sad My dress comes in July and I only have one month for alterations.

The place I ordered my dress from is doing the alterations and I believe its a flat fee of $450 regardless if they just hem or if they need to take it in and all
