What is going on in the Dominican?

Krystin, on June 11, 2019 at 3:47 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 9

So we had planned to spend our honeymoon in Punta Cana.... but these last few weeks I've seen way too many news articles regarding multiple suspicious deaths after drinking from the bar?? This is really concerning to me. And it's happening at multiple resorts too. Who else here has planned to honeymoon in the DR and what are your thoughts on this?

Don't let it concern you. If every resort or country posted about every death no one would go anywhere. This is just what is what is making news at the moment. The likelihood of something happening to you at the bar in DR is the same as something happening to you at the bar in your hometown. Just be vigilant, same advice inwould give you about the local bars. Don't accept drinks from strangers, don't leave your drink unattended, basically don't do stupid stuff.

I agree with this. I went to Punta Cana last June (and have traveled internationally a ton to lots of other "dangerous" places) and it can honestly happen, and does happen, anywhere. I have friends who just went to the Hard Rock in Punta Cana like two weeks ago and everything was completely fine. Just be smart and alert, like you would when traveling anywhere. Don't leave the resort unless you are going on an excursion. Book excursions through your resort once you arrive so they are secure.

So we were nervous about it to, as we have our honeymoon scheduled for next month in Punta Cana. However, we dug a little deeper. The recent one at Hard Rock, the guy died of a pulmonary embolism, which is a blood clot traveling and getting stuck. Another person had a history of heart problems. It appears that these incidents were all medically related to health issues they had prior to going on vacation. At least, based on the news articles out there. It's a scary coincidence, and we were starting to get worried for sure since we've actually stayed at the Hard Rock in Punta Cana before. We ultimately decided that we are healthy and in our late 20s with no personal history of heart disease or DVT or anything, and we aren't planning on taking any boat excursions, so we aren't going to change our plans (we had thought about).

Every single one of them had pulmonary edema though.... which is so strange because a couple died together... that's a scary coincidence.

I would say when traveling anywhere unknown there is always risk.

I wouldn't drink from the mini-bar in the room, it's so over-priced anyway.

Stay with your fiance at all times, don't go anywhere alone for precaution. Also I would only drink bottled water just in case. If you can learn a few words in Spanish you might get better service.

I haven't heard about deaths related to drinking at the bar, just a lot of reports of either food-borne illnesses and symptoms or the few people that died of pulmonary embolism. On the news they were suggesting it might be pesticide-related, blah blah blah. These reports are always overhyped, but with so many guests saying they've been sick in the last few months, I probably wouldn't choose to stay at the Hard Rock right now.

Omg, I was seriously reconsidering our honeymoon too!! My sister kept showing me these articles and said she was worried. You always have tI use your street smarts when traveling anywhere, especially with a country you’re unfamiliar with. But these reports are scaring me a bit, so we might go with the Bahamas!

We are taking our honeymoon in DR Punta Cana August 18th , if you read and research rather than just base your decision on headlines you will be better off. I am a RESEARCHER and have looked into all of this, statistics etc. We are getting married in Philly and are technically safer in Punta Cana, Philly had 351 homicides in 2018 (averaging almost 1 a day) the DR had 6.5 million tourists in 2018 and 52 deaths including homicide, suicide, drowning, and accidental .... I am just a logical thinker and don't jump to headlines etc. I also think about 911 in New York, Boston Marathon...that was right in our backyard. We have decided to stick to our plans and are planning on having the time of our lives in Punta Cana. I hope you can settle on what feels right to you, and that your honeymoon is EVERYTHING you dreamt it would be!!!

    ~PEACE AND BLESSINGS~
