What is a good length of time for a first dance song?

Sunshine & Sprinkles, on August 28, 2012 at 4:21 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

The song I want to use for my first dance is I Wanna Luv You by Donell Jones. This song is 4:10min. Is that to long?

Our dance instructor recommended no longer than 2:30 to 3 minutes.

It's a little too long, but if there's no good spot to shorten it, it's not horrendously long. Our dance teacher said that once you go past 3 minutes, the guests start getting bored and your arms start getting tired.

We are not having professional choreography. I just don't want to bore people by just watching us sway back and forth and maybe a few spins. lol

If you're worried about the length see if the dj is able to shorten it for you? That way you still have your first pick of songs and you won't be fretting over the guests being bored while you should be enjoying your husband's company.

Our song was 4:52 and I knew I should shorten it but our DJ just shortened it to 3:36 because there was just parts of the song that we definitely wanted. I don't think people will get too bored of us as we are doing an actual choreographed dance but I would shorten it down to 2:30/3 if you are just going to be swaying back and forth

4 minutes is going to feel like an eternity and it's going to get awkward for you and your guests unless it's a choreographed performance routine. And if it is choreographed, those are a lot of counts and steps to memorize.

If you're planning to stand and sway, make it 2-3 minutes, tops. You can have your DJ shorten pretty much any song, adjust the pace, or mash up the intro/outro to suit that timeframe.

    I agree with Krisa....

You'd think 4 minutes wasn't long until you have to watch 2 people dance. Most websites will tell you 2 minutes.

I had my DJ edit the song so ours would fit that.

Maybe you could dance together for the majority of the song and then invite guests to join you towards the end

Just swaying its a little long. we had a song choreographed and our instructor told us anything over 2-2.5 is long even for professional dancers. We are having the BP walk out. then when we are announced we will walk in to our song then start our dance. Ours is 4:17 and we are having the DJ fade it out at the end.

But in the end...who cares its your wedding you dance to YOUR song. Smiley smile
