What does your venue tax?

Ragan, on April 29, 2016 at 12:00 PM Posted in Planning 2 17

We have a pretty all inclusive venue (catering, alcohol, tables, add ceremony, add cocktail hour, etc). We did add the ceremony for $850 and the cocktail hour outdoor setup for $700. It looks like they added 22% service charge and 7% tax to those two things. Does that sound right? Why would a ceremony require a 22% service charge?

I'm asking because it adds another $475 on to a ceremony and cocktail hour. Just sounds weird to me. I totally get taxing and servicing the reception, alcohol, and food.

We have a 20% service charge and a 13% city tax. Ours is a hotel that is doing everything, as well.

I believe my ceremony is taxed... they just added $10 per head to the total. And they added the service and tax charges to the total.

Legit everything down to guests breathing. 9% tax on everything and then a service fee that I am currently drawing a blank on (maybe around 17%). To give you an idea: one aspect of the wedding is about $5,000. Of that, about $1,200 is taxes and service fees. Makes me wish we got married in our kitchen.

Nothing. I married in DE, where there's no sales tax. We saved thousands, by booking almost all the vendors there, too.

And yes, in my home state they also tax the service charge. They tax the shipping charge, for mail orders, too.

State and sometimes city law determine what is taxed. A service charge is sometimes a gratuity, sometimes it pays for labor (servers, setting up chairs, etc). It's a common fee.

Everything for us was taxed at the 20% service charge and then 7% sales tax, including set up services and rentals.

Ok thanks everyone. I guess it's normal for them to add up everything you want and then add the service fee and then the tax.... Even the service fee is taxed. Geez
