What do you think of Fall/Winter weddings?

LightBlueGem, on August 18, 2014 at 6:01 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

What do you guys think of fall/winter weddings? I've never been to one, and I'm having a terrible time picking a date. Our original date was supposed to be August 9th, 2014, but I had to undergo a pretty serious spine surgery and several months of recovery in April. Being off work left me low on funds, plus I wanted to be totally recovered and back into the swing of things before the wedding, so we decided to postpone until we could get our sh!t together. We don't really want to wait until next summer. I'm 35 and my bio clock is ticking. FI is a teacher, so we could always wed the weekend before spring break, but I'm concerned that a) people will be out of town/have other plans and b) traveling during such a high season will be a nightmare. My latest idea is to do a Friday, later evening cocktail reception second weekend of November, just before Veteran's Day weekend. It seems like it could work, but I feel like there's gotta be a reason no one else gets married at that time.

We had a fall wedding for a few reasons. 1: I HATE being hot and couldn't stand the thought of wearing a heavy dress and standing outside for photos when it was 100 degrees. 2: most peoples spring/summer weekends are busy and booked months ahead of time. We didn't have to worry about that with a fall wedding. 3: I love when the trees turn red. Our DOC at our venue told me October is now their most popular wedding month, so I guess other people feel the same way. In hindsight, I wish I had pushed it back to late October or November but that's for other reasons. I think if you have a November wedding you'll have a great turn out and it gives people a chance to get together before all the holiday craziness starts.

October = Fall in NJ and one of the months with the most wedding 'boom'.

FH and I are getting married in October, LOVE the season. I'm okay with winter weddings, the only downfall is snow, but of course that depends on where you live.

Well I love a good summer wedding...and had always dreamed of having a late summer fall wedding....but for a few reasons it wouldn't work so now I am having a Nov 29th wedding which is more winter than fall....but anyways...the awesome part of the deal is that things had great prices!!! because it was off season.

I think a true fall wedding is awesome but if your picking November I think your picking more of a winter wedding unless your in some part of the country that is still warm (I am in MN so its snowing by Halloween). Anyways...whatever season you end up getting married there are pro's and cons but I am sure it will be an awesome event regardless.

Well after October it becomes the off season due to weather for most places and holidays approaching. However I feel it's the best time of year! I never wanted a spring / summer wedding.

Nothing wrong with a fall/winter wedding. So many weddings happen during the summer that I think when people have a ton to go to, they start getting sick of them at the end of the summer (especially if your my age and everyone you know is getting married), so having a fall/winter wedding will be a nice break from all the summer ones.

I'm getting married in the fall because I love the colors. I knew I wanted dark reds and burnt oranges in the flowers and that's completely fall. I think fall and winter weddings are gorgeous. With the fall you get all the darker more dramatic colors and in the winter you could use lots of silver and gold. It just depends on where you live. I'm in Buffalo and could never risk a winter wedding because of how crazy our weather is. It could be almost 60 degrees or we could be having a blizzard.

I got married in January - so I'm obviously a fan. I chose it because:

    1) I hate being hot. Period.

    2) There are SO many weddings in the spring/summer - I liked that our's was the only really "big event" that time of year for our families.

    3) Discounts. Seriously, being in the off season I saved a lot on my venue.

    4) My husband works seasonally - he's off January - March so it made sense.

    5) We got awesome snow pictures.

Thanks, ladies! I'm definitely looking into it. The cooler weather is a plus, for sure. I've been to so many summer weddings where I was so hot that I didn't even want to dance by the time the dance floor opened, and I was certain the bride must have been miserable in her big dress. I went to a wedding a couple of summers ago in Texas where it was so hot the glue holding the straps of my shoes together melted and they completely fell apart. I had to race off to the closest Payless and buy a pair of $15 shoes. Thank god there was a strip mall nearby. And another where, when the bride tossed her garter, it was so wet with sweat that it landed with a splat and left a wet spot on the floor. No one picked it up. True story. I'm happy to avoid that.

Like a lot of other ladies mentioned, we chose February because we hate the heat! We live in Florida so in the summer it was WAY too hot for a wedding outside (or even inside)! Plus, since we live in Florida, winter here is really like fall for everyone else. So no one complains about it. Also, we wanted a winter honeymoon because we do live in Florida, beaches are readily available whenever we want. So, needless to say, I'm all for winter weddings Smiley smile

We are having a winter wedding here in Texas. We picked our date because of my school schedule and it worked for us. You gotta do what's best for you, even if it means knowing that some people might not come or like it. I work for a CPA so Jan - May is almost entirely off limits for me to plan a wedding. FH suggested end of April, I just looked at him and said "would you like to plan/take care of every last detail for the last 4 months because I'm cool with it" and he said "no way!" (I don't blame him LOL!)

    Pros:

-No wondering if it's indoor or outdoor, as much as I'd love an outdoor wedding I'd be terrified of bad weather ruining it or having to find a back up location as well. Unless you're in Cali or FLA then that's different

-Low season for weddings, so venues/vendors that go based on that cost LESS! Smiley smile

-More pick of cool venues/awesome vendors (even with us we had our pick and we had a 7 month engagement)

    Cons:

-Some relatives (especially FH's older and non adventurous ones) aren't coming because traveling far (Wisconsin to Texas) is just not in their cards

-Holidays....lots of hotels/some venues get booked with holiday parties

-Traveling for guests can be more expensive due to holidays, my OOT family is coming 12 days before Christmas so for some of them this is their Christmas present

There will never be a perfect date for all of your relatives/family/you to decide on, that's how we made our decision. It was best for us and we didn't want to wait until next fall.

October is very popular around here. It's about 102 degrees out right now. No way was I going to get married in July or August. Or even September (which is sometimes slightly better, but a busy month). Thus, getting married the exact weekend you are talking about.

I love fall weddings. There is always so much to do in the summer and then when a wedding is thrown into the mix there's less time to do other stuff. Plus it can be super hot.

My brother had an October wedding in MI and unfortunately for them it rained a lot (it was indoor but walking to and from was a pain) but what I liked is they did cider and donuts right after the ceremony before guests headed to the reception.

We're doing a beach wedding in Florida and we chose October because it is less hot than in the summer. No one wants to be sweating in a dress or suit. Plus rates are cheaper and I like the colors. I don't think you see as much "fall colors" on the beach but we're doing orange flowers so I think it'll be fitting.

I'm all about winter weddings. I think they are the most beautiful, personally, because I am in love with winter. I like the cold more than the heat and I prefer the cooler colors of winter over the brighter colors of spring and summer and the earthy colors of fall. I also prefer indoors to outdoors so, of course, a winter wedding should probably be indoors to keep everyone warm. I don't like having to deal with the wind, heat, and humidity that usually comes with hot outdoor weddings. However, fall might be okay because the temperatures start dropping. Also winter is cheaper for weddings (that was not factored into my decision, but it is a truth)!

Mine is Nov 8th! It really comes down to personal preference... The FH and I both love, love, LOVE the Fall/Winter seasons and are so excited for the possibility of snow and or colored leaves in our pics. Plus FH is always on the hotter side and I hate being too warm so it works =] All depends on what you want!

I'm getting married in October--not sure why spring and summer weddings are so much more common, but people do get married all year 'round.

End of November for me! It's not a busy time to things were actually less expensive. None of my guests have prior conflicts and most of them are coming which is great. Everyone likes the summer because they get nice outdoor photos - that can be hard in the north west where it is bound to be raining and cold. My photographer is currently on the hunt of gorgeous indoor photo locations for us.
