What are some good "cheap" wine brands?

Olivia, on March 1, 2019 at 6:18 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 21

Thinking of buying white and red wine aside from beer and liquor for our wedding. I'm just not a huge wine drinker, so I'm not sure which brands to look for.

I am unsure of brands but I know that Aldi has great prices on wine. Like $3 a bottle.

Can you define "cheap"? If you can provide an ideal price point, I'm happy to make suggestions. Do you have access to a Costco?

    Christy -

I do have access to a Costco. I wouldn't want to spend more than about $20 per bottle but if I can find anything less expensive than that, it'd be great too.

The Robert Mondavi Woodbride collection is on the cheaper end, and they have a nice selection. I think most of them are $7-9

If you have a Total Wine store near you, they usually have an aisle (or two or three) of under $10 bottles

There is a line called 90 point cellars that is a personal favorite. The bottles are all from big name wineries and fancy wines that are the surplus so they sell them almost as a generic and for like $10-$15 dollars a bottle. The big bold red blend is one I always have on hand at home and I can find it for $8 but tastes Soo good

I went to total wine and got $4 bottles of red and white. We asked a store clerk to help up and told her we wanted to spend as little as possible! Bought 60 bottles for $240

Trader Joe’s has a great selection of wines for less than $10/bottle.

Zonin Prosecco is 😋! Only $6.99/bottle at Trader Joe’s and maybe $9.99 elsewhere? It’s especially yummy at cocktail hour but some of us might drink with our meal (pasta, chicken, fish, vegetarian.

Go to Trader Joe’s or Total Wine for help. You can tell them the dishes you’re serving but in general Chardonnay is a popular white and goes well with chicken, fish, pasta & vegetarian meals. Merlot or Cabernet is popular and goes well with pasta, beef, & pork. But people who love their wine will mix; my hubby loves Cab and would choose that even with fish or chicken.

Sparkling: When I worked at the Ritz-Carlton on club level, we served Marquis de la Tour brut as the standard welcome drink/standard sparkling option for guests. You can normally find it for $10-$11/bottle.

You could also choose to go with Lamarca from Costco, which I think is like $12/bottle there or $14 elsewhere.

Red and White: Noble Vines have some really good, inexpensive options that are sold at Costco.

Chateau Ste Michelle (from Washington state) has quite a number of varietals in their Indian Wells line (and actually even just the namesake line) that are good options for a wide range of pallets - and again match your price point and can be found at Costco.

Josh Cellars has never let me down on taste! My FH and I have tried many of their wines and they are all delicious. I’m sure it varies depending on where you are, but it’s usually about $13 a bottle.

There’s an app called “Delectable” where you can take a picture of a bottle and it will show you the rating for that wine. If you downloaded that, you could scan a few super inexpensive bottles to see if they’ll still be good quality for the price. 🙂

Winking Owl at Aldi is about $3 but it's high quality wine (divorce settlement supposedly keeps it really cheap). They have a lot of varieties as well.
