WELP. I lost my first diamond out of my engagement ring =(

Kinsey, on November 3, 2014 at 5:11 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

Obviously the diamond is nowhere in sight. It is covered so thats convenient buuuut it will never be the same ring he gave me. I clearly didnt explain it that well to FH, as he thought it was THE diamond that fell out and almost passed out. Thank God for extreme insurance!

How often does this happen?! Officially annoyed.

I got insurance for just such an emergency, I think it depends on the setting how often this actually happens. If it is an illusion setting I assume ( I have no actual information here) it would happen more than if it was a claw setting. (or some other sturdy setting)

I have pave set diamonds on my band, and I lost 2 diamonds out of the band within a few months of getting my ring. The jeweler FH bought the ring from (Shane Co) has a free lifetime warranty, so they replaced both diamonds for free. They also added extra gold to make the ring more durable. That was over 6 months ago and I haven't lost another diamond since. If you have a similar style ring, then consider adding extra gold to sturdy the diamonds.

Is it the Pave diamonds around the band? I heard it was not too uncommon. My jeweler said do not cry if they fall out, it will happen. For example, my FH dropped my ring off to get it cleaned, the custom jeweler specified to the person who cleans them to NOT put it in one of those cleaning machines that vibrates, well, that is exactly what he did and 2 fell out. They were able to put them back in and set them again but it happens. They should not be that expensive to replace either. It might cost you more to put a claim in than to just pay to replace them. Again, that is if it is the Pave diamonds. Now if it is a side stone if you have say a triple setting, that would cost a lot more.

I lost a diamond two days after getting it resized ONE WEEK after getting engaged. We had rushed the jeweler in resizing because we still had to drive back 3 hours so they didn't make sure everything was tight before they went to get it for us. It was just the last tiny diamond on one side of the band and it was replaced two weeks later when my FH went back to that city. Took all of 5 minutes and I've had no problems since. It's still the same ring he gave me. It didn't lose it's sentimental value just because one of the tiny diamonds fell out.

Well that is good to know about the extra gold, @Ren. I will definitely ask about that! It is covered but the repair time is 72 hours so is pretty inconvenient if it happens frequently.

@FutureMrsDean - sorry you don't get it. My ring has one large diamond and several small ones, I was trying to explain that I lost one of the smaller ones.

Ugh that stinks. I assume when you say it wasn't THE diamond that it was a smaller one on the side, but that still sucks.

As a side note- @Andrea - I assume by illusion setting you are referring to a tension set ring? If you are, the chances of losing a diamond out of a true tension set (I.e one that relies entirely on pressure and does not have a hidden bar under the diamond) are far lower than with 4 or even 6 prongs. Prongs can be damaged, bent or otherwise compromised, but it's pretty darn hard to do anything that would affect 2,000 lbs of pressure.

@Emmy I am not sure if it is extreme, but it covers everything forever. I guess its the usual? I am not 100% sure about other ring insurance details but this one protects all of it - loss, theft, diamonds, band, cleanings, etc.
