Weird to have cake cutting before dinner?

sanders4ever, on April 23, 2017 at 9:05 AM Posted in Planning 0 26

With 26 days to go I can't shut off the wedding brain. I'm now thinking about who is going to cut the cake. I'd rather already have someone designated to do this so I don't have to worry about it. My caterer will cut the cake for as for an additional charge, but the contract says we have to do the cake cutting before dinner in order for them to do it. Is that weird? I honestly would rather just pay them to do it so I don't have to worry about it, but I think it might be weird to walk in have our first dance and go straight to cake cutting before dinner.

I don't that that's the norm but I also wouldn't think it's totally weird or would be a big deal to do it before dinner. I just wonder why they do it in this order.

The contract says "Ceremonial cake cutting is to be done before dinner in order to ensure adequate time to cut and serve cake."

I don't think it's weird to have the cake cutting before dinner. I'm choosing to have our cake cutting before because it will make more room for dancing and mingling the rest of the evening. Our reception space is on the smaller side so this was the best option for us.

It seems a little out of order but I don't think it's too weird. When I read the title, I thought you would be cutting and serving the cake before dinner. Which definitely would be weird.

We will cut ours before dinner so the servers have time to cut it and plate it in time to serve it when dinner is finished

This happened? at the last wedding I was at, and I'm going to say most people missed it because they didn't realize it was going to happen so soon. That's the one negative. People expect it after dinner, and when it's before, it can be confusing.

Hmmmm that is strange. It doesn't take long to cut and serve cake. But that's how we do it at our venue. Are you having the cake stationed?

We are entering the reception, doing our first dance, then cutting the cake. This is how our DJ team suggested doing it to avoid people missing it later on, trying to figure out when it's happening or where the cake is (our cake will be off to the side on the dance floor).

We are doing our cake cutting before dinner. We're doing our first dance right when we walk in and then heading over to the cake. Everyone will be able to see the cake suring the cocktail hour so I'm not worried about that.

That is bizarre. It takes literally 15 minutes to cut and plate cake for 150 guests, and having it cut before hand makes no sense at all. You pay a lot of money for the cake; it should be decor until the end. You have dinner, you cut the cake, you dance, then they serve it and you dance some more.

Neither would charging you for that. They have catering staff. That is what catering staff does. I'd want a nice clear explanation for that one. It would seem like cutting and plating when they are theoretically plating and serving your first course would make for even more of a time crunch.

It'll be fine. Pay the caterer to cut the cake. Cutting and serving wedding cake is quite a bit of work, and if you have someone do it who is not experienced, they may cut the slices too large and you could run out of cake before everyone is served. The standard size for a slice of wedding cake is 2"x4"x1", which is smaller than most people would cut.

@Celia they are charging us because it is not a food they provide. We have different baker and caterer. The baker just drops off the cake and leaves. I think its kinda of annoying but I guess we have to go with it.

Geez. We never provided the cake either but I'd be mortified to charge someone for this...

Here's an idea that we've used; order a little cake for each table. Use it as a centerpiece, on a cake server with some votives and flowers around it. Designate a person to cut and serve it at each table. And make sure your caterer isn't going to charge you to bus the plates....

@celia, we don't charge either. Seems strange to have that fee and penalize someone because they used a different caterer.

Cake cutting doesn't take that long and people that work your venue will know how to cut the cake. (Make sure to let them know if you want to keep the top). I just haven't seen the cake cutting being done first in my eight years where I work. People will know you are cutting the cake after dinner. The DJ normally announces it and the cake table is rolled to the B AND G to cut.

I'm assuming they want to do it this way because after the dinner is over they will clean their mess up and leave because I'm brining in an outside caterer they are not provided through the venue. They charge .50 a person to cut the cake which adds an extra $90 which is annoying but I guess I'm going to go with it so it's not something else I have to worry about. (This is the same caterer that wanted to charge an extra $1 per person to have water service at the table. We won't be doing that *eyeroll*)
