Weird question about earrings.

FFSaraD, on July 28, 2016 at 11:33 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

I have my ears pierced and the holes are still open. However, I never wear earrings, I haven't in years. I tried on the pair I bought for my wedding and I only had them in for a few minutes before I took them out. They are now noticeably red. I assume this is because my ears aren't used to having something in them, I'm not allergic to anything. Any suggestions on how long before the wedding I should wear studs or something before my ears will adjust? These are my earrings, I think they are gorgeous.

I know for me if an earring isn't real gold or silver that my earring holes will get itchy and red. I also have a hard time with anything but studs, the hanging/swinging of earrings can irritate me.

Ick, that's what I'm worried about. I don't want my ears to be red and itchy all day.

Piercings can reject or become sensitive to metals over time, so it's possible your ears just don't like the nickel now. I recommend wearing the earrings for at least a few hours every day, and making sure you clean them every single time in between. If your ears don't adjust (or get worse wearing them more than an hour) then you probably need new earrings.

I wear exclusively surgical steel and gold now, and even the gold ones can inflame for a day or two.

Put in some stainless steel studs for now. Your ears should adapt over time, but if they continue to be red and itchy you should probably just not wear earrings or maybe do clip ons. Pretty earrings aren't worth damaging your ears. Good luck!

It's rather common for people to have an allergy to nickel. A cheaper metal that doesn't irritate my ears is sterling silver or anything that says "hypoallergenic" on the package. Chances are if your ears are itching as well as red you have an allergy to certain metals.

I find that after a period of no earrings, if I wear some that I know are not irritating, it can make it ok to wear ones that would otherwise be irritating if I put then in first. Try going for a week or something with some hypoallergenic ones and try again.

I agree with Sam! Definitely start wearing some high quality stainless steel or surgical steel earrings on the regular to get your ears used to earrings again. If I don't wear earrings for a bit, mine get irritated as well. You should hopefully be ok!

Start wearing earrings now. And on your wedding day, hold off on putting them in until you're ready to go / take pictures. You can also take them out after your ceremony / all your pictures are done.

    ETA: they are cute earrings!

Definitely agree with PPs about hypoallergenic. I noiced my ears were much more sensitive after long breaks without wearing any.

Those are super cute! I am not allergic to much but my piercings sometimes act up. i can put anything cheap or expensive in my cartilage piercing or my main lobe hole. but my second holes right above the original ear piercings? forget it! i HAVE to have surgical steel or gold.

Also! if the post itself is hypoallergenic that doesn't necessarily mean the backing is! you could try the suggestions from PPs (especially starting wearing earrings now!) but you can also try getting the little rubber backs as well Smiley smile
