Weight capacity of wooden ceremony chairs

TFree, on July 8, 2016 at 6:29 PM Posted in Planning 0 56

Hi there! We have 2 very close family members who are overweight (400lb +) including FH's brother. Our ceremony is outside and the venue uses white wooden chairs with a max capacity of 400 lbs. We don't want to single anyone out and want to ensure their safety and comfort. We're Considering adding banquet chairs with white cover (no sash) on both sides of the front row, and have both members sit in these reserved seats. This is a sensitive topic and a genuine concern for us. My FH feels that his brother would rather stand up than sit in a chair that could possibly not hold him. We want to be inconspicuous and have adequate seating for them. Any advice out there?

Are you saying to sit all the fat people up front in "special seats"?

I'm sorry, what? You don't want "fat" people sitting in the front row?

ETA: Typically the immediate family of the bride and groom sit in the front row, so your FH's brother would be sitting there if not standing up with your FH.

Wow. TuRhonda, put yourself in the shoes of your overweight guests. Would you think, "aww how sweet, she's looking out for us!" or would you feel like you're on display and everyone knows it? Overweight people can sit on properly assembled wooden benches just as well as average/thin people can.

Sounds great. You should also make little badges for the single people to wear to highlight how lonely they are.

I'm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt here and guess that you mean the chairs will break? And you want them to sit in more secure seats for their safety, because you're not a jerk face who just doesn't want "fat" people sitting in your front row?? Cuz if that's the case, RUDE MUCH.

AMW, I find that for weddings it's best to go the traffic light route with it. Ask your single friends to wear green, the ones who may be open to a hook up, but are seeing people wear yellow and then the married couples wear red

TuRhonda, I get where you are coming from but I think it's coming across the wrong way. Unless the wooden chairs are super old, they should be able to hold any of your guests. If you are really concerned, then I would say maybe just do all banquet chairs instead of some of each.

Have you asked the venue if they know how much weight the chairs can hold? I would imagine you'd be surprised by the number. You say "overweight", but don't mention how overweight. Are we talking over or under 300lbs? And NO please don't go asking them.

What the hell chairs are so unstable they can't support the weight of a bigger HUMAN.

We aren't talking about kiddie chairs, right?

Not to white knight here or anything, but I actually thought she was saying the opposite - setting up the front row in a way that would be comfortable for her FH's brother and not draw attention to it.

I can't tell if you're concerned that the chairs will break or if you don't want these people in your pictures.

I think she just didn't want them to feel uncomfortable sitting chairs that they might feel would break every second.

Honestly, I have a big and tall friend who weighs 400 lbs. he would prefer to stand than sit in something that might break under him.

Id ask the chair rental people what the weight limit is of the chairs and if they provide other options for your situation.

I think she is saying she wants to make sure the wooden chairs do not break, as that will be be embarrassing for the overweight guests. If she was trying to hide the overweight guests she would not put them in the front row!

I think you guys are being super rude to her, when she's in fact trying to be accommodating and provide an option for them that's for the whole family, not just the heavy person, so as not to draw attention to them. She said she was worried about a family member.

Did you're venue tell you the chairs can hold up to X lbs? If so, that might not be a bad idea, it would be embarrassing for that person to have a chair break.

@K&D17 I don't feel anyone is being rude, I think we're just all confused on what her concern is.
