Wedding Vows with religious/God sensitivity

Alexis, on December 14, 2013 at 11:27 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

My FH and I are writing our own vows and a family pastor is marrying us. My FH was raised in a very religious household and I was not at all. However, both of us at this point would probably fall under the category of "agnostic". One of the requirements for being able to write our own vows is that we must mention God's presence in our marriage. I don't want to disrespect this request, but I also don't want to stray away from our current viewpoint.

I'm don't really want a theological discussion, but am more looking for a way to mention God that respects all belief systems (there will be a diverse group at our wedding). Any suggestions/Advice?

Is the pastor requiring you to include god in your vows, or is your fiance requiring it? If the pastor is requiring it, I might talk to your fiance about finding a new officiant. If it's your fiance, then you need to really talk things out.

What about something like "I thank God for bringing the two of us together"

Are you doing any reading from the bible Maybe use those.

Can you slip in a pledge of allegiance, "under God." Like, "I stand before you under God and promise..."

At our ceremony, we had a number of blessings that mentioned God in the original Hebrew, but got interpreted in more universal ways. For example, for one that literally translated would have been, "Blessed are You, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe, who created everything for His Glory," we used "Blessed is the wonder of creation, the earth, the provider of all things." If this sort of thing would satisfy your requirements, you can check out our ceremony at this link for inspiration:

Do you have use the word "God" specifically? Maybe describe God in a round about way if you don't have to say it, so it's a more generalized reference. I wouldn't want to include it in my vows though just to appease others. These are your promises and vows, not others' ya know? They should respect that I think.

I wish I had better advice for you =/

Google non-denominational vows and wedding ceremonies presided over by UU ministers. Both will get you a bit broader interpretation.
