Wedding venue refuses to reschedule

Mrs.a, on January 14, 2021 at 9:13 PM Posted in Planning 1 6
I’m not sure what to do about our venue. We already postponed/rescheduled once last year to spring and at the time our coordinator said it was not a problem. We signed a new contract for the new date, our deposit was transferred, etc. Fast forward, we now want to reschedule again as the vaccine may not be available to everyone until May. I reached out to our coordinator and she said we can only reschedule within 30 days if there are restrictions prohibiting us from having our event. There’s no reschedule policy outlined in our contract, only a cancellation policy. Any advice?

The terms and conditions will stipulate what you can and can't do. If there is no clause dealing with rescheduling, then you most likely do not have the option to reschedule (unless the vendor agrees to do so, likely with a fee involved).

If there are laws in place where you live that specifically prohibit large gatherings such as weddings, you will likely be able to negotiate a suitable outcome with your venue as it would not be legal for the event to go ahead. In the absence of this, if you want to reschedule solely because you want to wait until everyone is vaccinated, you will be at the mercy of the vendor to reschedule - if there is no reason why the venue cannot supply the services you are paying for, they have every right to hold you to your contract as agreed.

I get what you’re saying but I don’t see it that way. We have a right to cancel, so we could cancel altogether at this point and reserve a new date with a new contract. So why they won’t simply ‘reschedule’ is beyond us. The date is available that we want to reschedule to. There’s nothing that binds us to the existing contact. All we have to do is notify them in writing to cancel.

Since It's legally binding then you may have to cancel then have a new contract made.

Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking. It just seems absurd to make us jump through hoops like that since they allowed us to reschedule before under the same terms and conditions (the contract didn’t change from when we previously rescheduled).

If it won’t cost you anything to cancel and that is the only way out then you may just have to do so. Most venues charge cancellation fees but if yours doesn’t, you may as well go that route if they won’t reschedule.

We just heard back from our coordinator and we can cancel and schedule a new date with a new contract. However we would lose our deposit which isn’t very much in the grand scheme of things. 🤷‍♀️
