Wedding under 5k??

Berta, on July 7, 2020 at 5:21 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting on here. My fiance and I are having a small wedding in outer Portland this September. To save money, we cut out many many things out of our wedding (save the dates, bridesmaids/groomsmen, favors, flower girl, dj etc.) We expect to have 25 guests at our wedding and we are aiming to stay within our budget of under 6k. We already have our venue, officiant, photographer, cake/dessert table, my dress & shoes and some decor. I will provide a breakdown down below of everything we have and have paid for. We still need our rings, his suit/shoes (he plans to rent his suit), and more decor and a caterer/food!! Plus other services like his and her wedding outfit alterations, my makeup/hair/nails. We still need help finding a caterer and I'm nervous that it will put us above our budget. We plan to bring our own alcohol (beer and wine), but we need help coming up with catering ideas or on what to serve..we're open to the idea of self-catering for example getting food from the deli at our local grocery store. I just don't know if I should bother with finding affordable catering or if we should self-cater. A lot of places I have contacted have pretty high minimums. Our wedding ceremony will start around 4:30pm followed by "dinner" around 5:30pm. My last big question is, looking at the breakdown, do you guys think we can do everything for under $6k? I appreciate the help, thanks a lot!!

Breakdown

Venue for 5 hours (tables, chairs, glassware, flatware, plates) - $1,724

Bilingual Officiant - $150

Photographer (including travel fee) - $775

Cutting cake and dessert table - $283

Wedding dress - $850 (I could've found cheaper I know)

Wedding shoes - $20

Decor (so far) - $160

Note - For decor we bought some artificial flowers, mini chalkboards, metal tubs for beverages, cute glass jars for drinks. I most likely will get in contact with someone at a farmer's market to see if I can get a deal on flowers for my bouquet Smiley smile

With 25 guests i think you might be able to find a private room at a restaurant

We were looking at catering through chipotle or Qdoba for 60 people and it was around $1250z maybe you can get food through a local restaurant and either pick it up or have it delivered. Italian and Mexican should be fairly easy to do this, huge trays of pasta. You could also do pizza & salad. Depends on what you two like/want.

I wouldn't recommend self-serving right now because of the pandemic. A lot of venues have eliminated buffets/stations because of the sanitary risks they create. Buffets also create lines so social distancing would be an issue. I would definitely have serves. Based on your breakdown, you only have about $2,000 left to spend and you still have a good amount of things that you need to purchase. Your best option would have been to have it at at restaurant with a private room like Melle has suggested. Also, depending on your venue they might not allow food that it's provided by a license caterer. Have you confirmed with that that you are allowed to bring your own alcohol? Alcohol can be very expensive and could take up a good portion of your remaining budget.

    I hit reply too soon!
As far as budget, spending 1/3 on venue only isn’t ideal. We’re trying to stay in the same budget range and our venue+catering is around $2500 for 50 people.
Have you gotten alterations on your dress? My $200 dress is now $620 with my $420 alterations. Beware that can add up fast. All I needed was a hem, bustle, and we decided to change out the zipper back for a corset. Also, are you allowed to self-cater and bring your one alcohol to the venue? I know most don’t allow that because of licensing and insurance issues. Good luck!

You could look into food trucks. Food will definitely eta up the rest of your budget (no pun intended).

Do not self-cater. Most venues don't allow it anyway for liability issues. Have your favorite restaurant cater for a fraction of the cost of a wedding caterer.

You can definitely pull it off on that price but you have to get creative and avoid anything labelled 'wedding'.

Can't change the title. It's suppose to say 6k not 5k!

I would not self serve and food and drinks will take up the rest of your budget. But for 25 people i would say maybe 2,000-3,000 on food and drinks if your allowed to bring in your own liquor.

Did you sign a contract with your venue already? If not, then I think that booking a private room at a restaurant would be the way to go
