Wedding Superstition...Have you heard this before?

Dayna, on May 23, 2016 at 9:37 AM Posted in Planning 0 21

2 years ago I was a bridesmaid in my friend's wedding and at the rehearsal, she had a married cousin walk down the aisle in her place. She said it was bad luck for the bride to walk down the aisle before her wedding day.

Has anyone else heard of this before? What are some other wedding superstitions you've heard, besides the common one of the groom not seeing the bride before the wedding?

Never heard that before... I've heard of the groom not seeing the bride before the ceremony, dressing the bridesmaids in dresses similar to the bride to ward off evil spirits and confuse them, basically all the standard ones.

My FMIL keeps trying to deter me from certain decisions by saying I have to do blah blah because IT'S TRADITION! Really? And what has tradition gotten you, my mother, or other people that have multiple divorces under their belts? I'm not going to focus on the superstitions, just my marriage :-)

That's a pretty old superstition, but one that I didn't think got much play anymore.

The original Emily Post from 1920 has a super long section on wedding rehearsals where she goes on at length about how the bride has to be there to direct anything but absolutely cannot walk down the aisle until the day-of. It's definitely worth a read - you can find a copy on Google Books.

My aunt did this when she was married, had a bridesmaid walk down in her place. I don't really get why it is bad luck, but I have heard of it.

I have heard that. My sister had her MOH "play" her at the rehearsal. I don't like it. I want everyone to practice their own role. My officiant will have everyone in the correct role. BTW, my sister's marriage lasted 7 years, so it didn't really prevent any bad luck.

Out of over 1,500 ceremonies -- only 1 bride didn't want to walk the aisle at rehearsal.

Of course, I don't have the couple say their vows and I don't pronounce them married at the rehearsal -- not out of superstition, but because they'd be married THEN.

I've never heard of that to be honest. Does it change if your not having the rehearsal where your getting married?

I've heard of that one...not sure what any of the superstitions truly mean. I told my FH's cousin this weekend that we are just going to have faith in God. He mentioned his fiancé (got engaged two weeks ago) wants to buy him a ring too, but he feels it is bad luck. I just wouldn't wear the wedding ring until you're married.

I've never heard this one before. My sister's officiant refused to call her and exH by their real names during rehearsal for a superstitious reason, which I'd never heard of, either!

Thanks for the feedback/input ladies! I had been a bridesmaid in 5 other weddings prior to that one and that was the first time I had ever heard of it. My friend who got married is in her early 50s, so that may be why - it doesn't seem to be as common anymore.

I have heard of it. I am very superstitious so I will ask my future niece to stand in for me during rehearsals. That way I can also see how where everyone is placed is going to look to our guests.

Doesn't that bring bad luck to any bridesmaids that aren't married? They are walking down an aisle...if so I'm screwed...lol

Yeah my mom told me that I can't be in be rehearsal. It doesn't really matter to me, as long as my dad knows where to walk and FH knows where to stand, I'll end up in the right spot.

I had never heard of that until a couple of weeks ago! One of our friends made me walk in the place if her. Awkward for me!

I think this is called a bride's proxy? I only saw it in one wedding and it was in the South, so I'm not sure if it's a southern tradition. The bride had her proxy listed in the program as an honor position (she wasn't a bridesmaid).

I was also a bridesmaid in a wedding a few years ago where another BM was engaged to a groomsman and the bride had them walking together. The BM threw a complete fit because she only wanted to walk down the aisle with her FH on her wedding day.

I've heard of someone that's not the bride standing in for her during the rehearsal but that was mostly so she could see the staging and what it would look like.
