Wedding savings

How is everyone else saving for their wedding? I thought it was a good idea for FH and I to have a separate savings account together just for our wedding fund. We both can add to it every month to save up. He doesn't like this idea. How is everyone else saving with their FH?

Why doesn't your FH like that idea? What does he think you should do? Are you two in agreement about handling finances together in the future after being married?

We put a set amount from each paycheck in our separate savings account. I am pretty much paying for vendors and he is paying for the venue.

We aren't opening until join accounts until we're married, so we currently just add to our separate savings for the wedding.

I opened a seperate account for myself and started depositing a set amount each month into it. FH gives me any "loose money" that he gets from people paying him back for things he's purchased or bonuses.

He saves a portion of his salary every month in his own account (but most of his "savings" he is using to pay off his student loans). Luckily we already have our full budget saved and in my account so I'm not too worried about making it a joint and having him put the money into there.

A month after getting engaged (Oct 2015) we opened up a savings account that we've been only using for wedding stuff. After wedding we will use that account for vacations & house related items or bills.

I opened a money market account in my name and we both contribute to it. He's also an authorized user on my credit card so we only use the credit card now to build miles for the honeymoon.

We opened a joint dream savings account through Barclays and have automatic weekly contributions. But I would focus more on how you plan to handle finances in the future if you aren't agreeing on how to save for the wedding. Finances play a huge role in conflicts in marriages so it's important to find your common ground early on. For some couples that's super easy but for others it might take some work. Good luck!

We opened a joint checking and savings account separate from all of other accounts. We've (me) have been sending money there based on what my budget is to ensure we meet that number by the time the wedding happens! So far, it's been a good system, I know we'll always have cash should a bill arrive or a deposit be due. It's worked for us!

We decided to both have different savings accounts. We have the same bank but since we're also buying a house along with getting married we decided to have separate savings. He's saving up for the house and I'm saving up for the wedding. We both still of course plan on paying for the wedding and house together because we consider our money to be both of ours and not just one but we did it this way to build up credit and to show loans and credit card companies that we're able to save and be reliable. After we get married we will have joint accounts. Smiley smile

We are waiting to combine finances until after the wedding in 3 weeks. Mostly out of laziness - I plan to change my name and that would just be one more place I need to do it. My parents are helping a lot, so our portion of the wedding expenses is about $10k which for us is not a strain. If we were covering the entire wedding cost though, I think the joint account you both contribute a set amount to from every paycheck makes the most sense. Good luck!

We have a spreadsheet that includes all our bank and investment accounts. So while we don't have a specific account for it we can see what we have that is earmarked for the wedding.

With only a 7 month engagement we don't have time to specifically save for the wedding and are just using funds from our general savings. We are lucky because my FH had one the VW diesels that we just sold back to VW and are not going to replace. We decided that we can get by as a 1 car household. All that money saved went straight to the wedding.
