Wedding Reception Ideas That Aren't Dancing

Taylor, on January 29, 2021 at 5:37 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 15

Hi everyone this is my first post here and I need some help!

I'm a person who one of my favorite things at a wedding is getting out on the dance floor. I also have a family of people who love to move and party. My FH though, exact opposite. So is his family. I'm trying to find a way to balance a night of people dancing, drinking having a good time while not having this whole other half of guests feeling left out. I also don't want to make it so chill that the people who are wanting to get the party started are left sitting down the whole time.

I may be overthinking it! I love hosting parties and dinners (it's what I did quite frequently before COVID), but my want for everyone to have a good time almost stresses me out more than anything else in the wedding planning process! I just want everyone to have an awesome time!

We had a photo booth and I believe every single guest at our wedding had their photo taken in the photo booth at least once. Guests that weren't interested in dancing also just hung out and talked with each other.

Do you have an outdoor section of your venue? If so, you could setup various lawn games! You could also have board games available, or do a trivia game, or setup photos around the venue for people to walk around and look at. Otherwise, I'm sure many people will socialize with each other if they aren't out on the dance floor!

I was considering the photo booth. I have to see where we are money wise after photography to see if we can swing it. Thanks!

We do have an outdoor area but it's a rooftop, so no lawn games. But reading the last bit of your comment and re-reading my question makes me think: "Taylor, you're possibly overreacting..."

    Thanks!

I don't think you're overreacting - I think it's really thoughtful that you're actively setting up an environment where all of your guests will feel comfortable! I'm not much of a dancer when I go to weddings, but I usually end up having a great time catching up with friends/family at the wedding, talking with people, enjoying a few beverages, taking pictures, watching other people dance, etc. I'm sure many of your guests who don't dance will also be happy to just catch up with each other! The photo booth idea that Veronica suggested is also a good idea!

If you really want to entertain people who are not interested in dancing, you could have a photo booth or some sort of live entertainer (caricature artist, magician, tarot card reader, live painter, etc)

Your FH family sounds like my husbands family, husband included. They all hung around and chatted. Everyone had a good time. My husband enjoyed time hanging out with his friends. The DJ had a few songs where he pulled everyone up which was nice. He had everyone make a huge circle around us, which was awkward, and expected us to dance Infront of them all. But we went and grabbed some guests to get them dancing too. Then we had an anniversary dance that got everybody up. And then some classic line dances like the Maccarina

    Edit
Macarena and the electric slide got a lot of people from both sides up.

Usually if people don't dance, they love to chat.

Chances are, they’ll be too busy mingling and catching up to worry about entertainment!

I really love the idea of a caricature artist or a live painter. That sounds like so much fun! We're both art people too so I feel like it's still very "us".

That's true, he'll probably like being able to catch up with all of his out of town guests. A line dance usually gets everybody up that's for sure!

You make a good point, whenever I'm at a wedding I',m usually chatting it up when I'm not dancing!

We had a few kids perform on music instruments for like 10 minutes. Very cute and it got everyone up from their seats and made them more inclined to mingle. We also had a photobooth and we were soooo glad because we got some silly shots of more than half of the guests.
