Wedding readings: first person reading ok?

Coffee&tea335, on June 16, 2015 at 11:45 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 5

So I'm trying to pick out readings that several relatives will be doing during the ceremony, and many of the ones I like have lines that are written in the first person. For example, "I love you," or "my" heart or "our" love. Is it strange to have the person doing the reading saying a poem from the first person, even though the lines are something the bride and groom would be intending to say to each other? Or should the reading be something that just talks about love as a third person, such as the standard Corinthians verse?

Rewrite what you want them to say using "you" instead .... Print out new version. Easy!

Both of our readings were first person-- I think its perfectly fine (and very common), so no need to change-- people will know that its not really your Great Aunt Aileen saying thinking that stuff Smiley tongue

My reading was first person. Your guests know that the reader didn't write the passage/poem/story.

One of ours was first person - "i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)" by ee cummings - it was fine! I dont think anyone will notice. Our other was 3rd person and everyone thought the guy reading it had written it!

First person readings often carry emotion better than some third person readings. No one will find it strange. They'll be focused on the meaning, not secretly wondering if the reader is trying to confess their undying love for you at a very awkward time.
