Wedding Planning During Covid

Joanna, on June 28, 2020 at 5:40 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 9
I need some advice from the community. My fiancé and I got engaged earlier this year and hired a wedding planner to alleviate wedding planning stress.

Since hiring our planner, we can count the number of proposals from venues with one hand. Keep in mind we’ve given the OK to get pricing on at least 8 locations. We’ve been working with this company for less than 5 month. I know times are tough due to COVID but I honestly feel like a neglected bride. Instead of easing the stress of wedding planning this has added even more stress - we’re planning towards a July 2021 wedding.
Am I being completely unrealistic here? Don’t I need to have my venue secured this summer? How often should a wedding planner be sending clients venues to review? Is this something that should’ve been included in the contract?
I just don’t know how other planners are dealing with planning during these times.

We personally have been viewing venues since January on/off, though have now slowed down a bit due to Covid. Many places stopped touring and etc for a while with everything shut down, though most have started again by now, at least where we live. We initially had hoped for September 2021, though are now finding that with 2020 brides rescheduling everything is booked solid, unless we want to settle for a weekday wedding. Unfortunately we have made the decision to plan for 2022 instead, which is some what disappointing but shows the repercussions that can occur with everything going on. For now we are just thankful that we are not going through what current 2020 brides have had to ender, and hope that this is all resolved by our wedding date!

I’m a little confused. Are they not suggesting venues for you guys to look at?

With our wedding planner we were responsible for touring and signing contracts with all of our vendors. We told her our budget, guest size, and overall vision. She would then suggest venue places. It was our responsibility to go check them out and book one. I know each wedding planner is different though.

I’m sorry you had to push your wedding back to 2022. I hope when 2022 rolls around COVID will be a thing of the past.

My fiancé and I postponed from July 2020 to Feb 2021. We were opened to a weekday wedding. We didn’t want to take a Saturday away from a 2021 couple. However, February is a very slow wedding month in my city and a Saturday just worked better for my vendors. Best wishes in planning ☺️

We got engaged in March of this year and have had A LOT of trouble getting venues to respond when we reached out. Some have never gotten back to us while others took a couple weeks to send us more than an auto replay. Your planner might be having trouble finding places that are responding as they need to make sure the places are still open for booking. We have also run into places that respond at first but then have changed their mind on booking future events due to the uncertainty of the current situation. I would voice your concern to your wedding planner and ask why they have sent so few venues for you to look at.

Our process is a little different. Our planner knows our wedding details and the provides a list of venues for that for our criteria. From there, we let our planner know which venues to pursue and asks for cost estimates and is also taking a lead in booking tours for us.

One of the concerns is that we’re not getting enough venue suggestions (or at least this is how we’re feeling). Im just not sure if there is supposed to be constant communication with wedding planners about this....should they be reaching out with new venues at least once a week? Because if that’s the case, we’re not getting that. What was your experience with your planner?
I just don’t know what the norm is. Or if this is something that’s fair to address.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We’ve heard some venues are slowly opening back up for tours too. Best of luck with your wedding planning.

It sounds like your wedding planner is suppose to have more of an active role. Ours isn’t so hands on. Definitely reach out to them and ask for more venue suggestions and questions. I would suggest a video chat.

We met with ours once. She gave us a ton of vendors that we had to research and book ourselves. Then our second meeting was about forming a wedding day timeline.
I agree with you...now is the time to book a 2021 venue and they should be giving you more guidance.

Hi Joanna! There isn't necessarily a routine cadence of communication between you and your planner, it comes more in peaks and valleys based on planning deadlines!

However, securing a venue is literally the first thing you need to do to start planning so I'd also want to get that figured out ASAP! I'd try to schedule a call with your planner to talk about specifically booking a venue, and see what your planner has been doing and hearing back from venues.
