Wedding planner?

Vanessa, on December 6, 2021 at 10:17 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 18
Hey there!

I just discovered this forum and I’m amazed with the information!
I wanted to share this experience, I’d like to know what you think about…I’m just starting to check on pricing, venues and all, I have it a little bit more complicated since I’m not currently in the country and It’s more likely I won’t be until next year. (We are hoping to be able to find something for sept 22) We want to get married in Austin, Tx.I contacted this wedding planner company to see what they offer and maybe what kind of help I could get.The first thing they asked was the wedding count and the budget. (50p/ 25k), I told them I liked a wedding decor they had in their portafolio. It was very minimalistic but with great taste. They simply replied saying that wedding cost around 45k and if we didn’t have flexibility in our budget they wouldn’t even schedule a consultation call.
I found this to be extremely rude and I’m quite surprised.
Am I in the wrong here? Am I being to naive?
I think that 25k for 50pp is a lot. 50k is just insane.
What do you guys think?

Their response could definitely have been phrased a little nicer, but I think I partly understand where they are coming from. It seems that you and the company are too far apart in pricing for that particular decor, and they likely don't want to waste your time if they know they can't accomplish what you want in your price range. Are you open to them suggesting other ideas that would be in your budget? If so, I would let them know that you're open to exploring other decor that would fit your price range, and see what they can come up with. Otherwise, if you're set on the particular decor style that you saw, I would keep looking for other planners who can help make your vision a reality in budget. In either case, I honestly would probably move on to a different planner, since just based on the response they gave, they don't seem ideal to work with.

That response would be very off putting to me. Even if they are right that the design was more than your budget, they should’ve said something like “this wedding was about 45k, but we can take your vision and scale it down to your budget.” Also, you don’t even know how many people were at that wedding. It could’ve been more expensive because they had more guests.

I’m not sure about Austin, TX, but in my area a 25k budget for 50 people is very reasonable.

    Thanks for your reply!

No, I’m not ser in that decor per se, I just happen to make the comment I liked it. I wasnt even asking for pricing for something like that. We exchanged emails only and I even asked them if they provided services with lower budget, their answer was recommending other companies. I was/am still shocked.

    I know!
I thought the same. I even told them we could have some flexibility on the budget BUT we didn’t want to go crazy with it, I also mentioned again the fact I liked their wedding but I’m not so much of a fan of flowers for example, so I know we could cut some expenses.
They just said my vision doesn’t fit theirs.I was like: ???? It seems at least you are willing to spend 45k+ They just don’t care.
After the first contact I definitely decided NOT to go with them, but I did want to see how it is that their treat future customers.
I really felt frustrated because I kind of felt my budget was unrealistic.
Im not even looking for something extra fancy or anything. Just minimalistic but tasteful.

They definitely could've phrased that nicer lol. So, I completely understand why you are shocked because I would be too!
If that's how they came off then I would just move on because that already seemed like a red flag to me.
Since you are getting married next year they are probably booking up like crazy as all other venues are as well. Therefore, they are probably looking only for those certain clients that can make up their minimum which could very much be the 45k? Certain venues have a minimum that you have to spend due to their tax purposes. The venue my husband and I were originally looking into was about 15k minimum which was not bad at all, but we REALLY wanted to save what we could because we had other plans such as paying off our vehicles, funding our honeymoon, doing house projects, etc. Smiley smile

Oh wow, then yes I would definitely move on! Their response to you was unnecessarily harsh and rude, and there are nicer vendors out there. Sorry that all of that happened!

I save that photo of the decor you like and then move on to a different planner.

Definitely not great customer service. Which might be a good thing you experienced it now rather than after hiring them… My experience when reaching out to my planner was I gave them a budget & my inspo, but they then told me if/how they could make that work realistically. I feel like that’s how it should’ve gone. I recommend shopping around. There are plenty out there!

And by the way I shared the same budget but for 100-120 people in Atlanta, which is just as or more expensive than Austin (I’m a Dallas native & looked in that area at one point). I ended up having to increase it a bit but that should tell you your ask is relatively doable depending on your details of course.

We're planning a 40p wedding in southern California and we're budgeting around 20k, so I think your price is totally reasonable! I would recommend looking for venues that have decor items available or packages with a lot of things included rather than going through a separate design service!

    Thanks for your advise!

My main issue is the long distance, I'm not in Austin to have everything done myself, therefore I have no other option than hiring somebody.

Thanks to you all, I checked on other planning services and I'm excited to see a price range I think we can afford.

    Smiley heart

I get that! We're doing everything from Kansas for a California wedding so I actually worked with the DOC I hired to adjust her package a bit to better suit our needs! She's going to go walk the venues for me and she's actually working out some of the logistics with the vendors and contacting them directly, which isn't usually something a DOC does. Just be open with everyone you chat with and see what they can tailor to your needs!

You're not wrong at all!! That's a lot of money you are willing to spend for a small number of people. Look for planners here or google other people. I would not give that company my business.

What!! That’s ridiculous!! I’m a wedding planner that specializes in doing weddings as cheaply as possible without losing any quality. The most my clients have ever payed for a wedding was 10k. 25k is a huge budget for 50 people, you need to find a different wedding planner!! It could absolutely be done for less than that. What needs to be negotiated isn’t the price, but maybe the work load and quality. Maybe some of the decor won’t be outsourced and more handmade or maybe the dress can be made by a smaller designer instead of purchased from a big wedding company or maybe you should consider painted fake flowers or a combination or fake and real flowers, what everyone wants to negotiate on differs depending on the bride. But personally I don’t think anything will need to be negotiated 😂 jeez!

    Hi Edan!

Just came across this post and wondering in what locations you do wedding planning? I'm in SoCal & we've got a $10,000 for 75 guests. I've already done a ton of research myself, but I'm still feeling stressed about keeping within budget. Let me know if this is in the scope of your work!
