Wedding Party: Friends Or Family?

The Bride, on August 18, 2019 at 11:06 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 20

When it comes to picking a best man or a maid of honor for your wedding do you think it would be disrespectful to pick a friend over a sibling? Why or why not?

I think you should choose who you’re closest to, regardless of your relation. Sharing DNA doesn’t guarantee you a spot in anyone’s bridal party.

Pick whoever you are close to. I’ve never understood people who pick family members to be in the bridal party JUST because they are related.

If I'm being completely honest, my sister was only in my wedding party because I didn't want to hurt her feelings, She can really be self-centered and pushy. Throughout the planning I called her a bridesmaidzilla. If she weren't family she would not have been in my wedding party.

I know a lot of people who have chosen their sisters or FSIL as BM’s strictly because of relation. Choosing your bridal party should be about who you’re close to, not about padding people’s egos/feelings. I don’t have any siblings, but if I did, I would not have them as a BM if we were not close. I’d rather save those spots for the people I’m closest too. I wouldn’t want unnecessary stress or drama during my wedding.

Don't get me wrong I'm close to my sister but she can be a little annoying 😂
If I could do it all over again I would still pick her though.

After some in-fighting amongst my friends I chose a small family-only bridal party. My sister and cousin were awesome. My other cousin caused so much drama that we don’t talk anymore.

Idk if I could have pick one friend as a MOH without starting a ton of drama

I picked friends and family who are closest to me but one of my childhood friends was upset she wasn't apart of the wedding party because she was with me in 2012 when I met my husband.

    Was I wrong?

I don’t think so. I wanted a small bridal party and you can’t have everyone up there

Disrespectful? No. But on the other hand, I chose only family members. Friendships sometimes fade away, but I know my sister or my children will be with me for life.

We only have people standing up with us and not best or maid of honor. Some are her family and some are our friends. We didn't want any titles because each are important to us. As far as a shower or bach party goes, I'm not sure what will happen. We'll see.

I agree with this 100%. Even if you're related, it doesn't mean you share a close bond!

Not at all! Most of my bridal party are my friends or my cousins!

My bride squad consisted of four friends, my sister, and my cousin.
