Wedding Makeup Culture: East Asian vs. American

Alisha, on October 6, 2021 at 12:04 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 2

I have been looking into wedding makeup for a while. I have noticed it is not easy for me (an East Asian) to find a makeup artist in my area, that works with my feature well. So I did some digging to see if I can do my own makeup, and I noticed something interesting:

In the state, we often go with the high contour heavy coverage look. This is because we don't want to look "washed out" in the wedding photos. Looking at a few popular makeup tutorials I have noticed Asian wedding makeup focus more on the natural look. The picture in the middle is already considered as "a lot of makeup" from what I have gathered. I do like the natural looks more, since I usually wear a little to no makeup.

Now I start to wondering, and maybe people who are more familiar with makeup and wedding photography... Does contour really make that big of a difference in HD photos? Will I look "washed out" if I have decided to go light on my contour?

Makeup generally needs to be heavier to photograph well, but I don't think you would look washed out without contour. Just looking at photos of weddings in East Asia on instagram or whatever, you can see that people look lovely, and not washed out at all.

Contour is a cyclical fashion trend, in my opinion, and although it is softening now, if you look back a few years where heavy contour and highlight were super fashionable, they look QUITE harsh and over the top (they did then too, but everyone was doing it, so it was less jarring).

I think that finding someone who is used to doing East Asian looks would be best, assuming you don't want the stress of doing it yourself!

That's a good point on the contour history.
    Thanks for the suggestion.
