Wedding License Help: Non-ny Resident Getting Married in ny

Jillian, on July 6, 2021 at 8:29 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 6

Hello fellow brides!

Has anyone else out there gotten married in NY recently, but isn't a NY resident? We live in PA but we grew up in NY and our families are still there, so we are having our wedding there this August. However, I've noticed that (I'm guessing due to COVID), most city and town clerks are only issuing marriage licenses to residents. I'm starting to get a bit panicked. If you were in a similar situation, which office did you use?

I'd rather avoid Manhattan if it's possible (of course we will go if necessary). We're willing to drive a few hours if we have to.

Appreciate any help you can offer!

I am also getting married in NY, which is where my family and hometown are, but am currently a resident of MA and ran into the same issue. I called around to town clerks offices in the different towns around my hometown (Rochester) and some of the more suburban towns did not have restrictions about only seeing residents. I ended up getting an appointment no questions asked in Pittsford (suburb of Rochester). You might have more luck with being seen by a town clerk the further out of a big city you go, but would recommend calling around. Hope this helps and good luck!

Not New York but I did get married in a different state during covid. We did everything by mail. I would call the local Secretary of State in the *county* you are getting married in and they will advise you on what to do. It’s actually by county not by state for getting it issued.

We are getting married in NJ and since neither of us are residents, we have to apply for the license in the borough of where our ceremony is going to be and there is a 72 hour waiting period as well as a 30 day expiration.

The nice thing about getting married in NYS is it’s actually not by county and you can can a marriage license anywhere in the state. I thought it was just by county at first and was pleasantly surprised when I found out it’s not for NY!

I got married October 2020 in Marlboro, NY and we’re NJ residents. It was really quick and easy to get a marriage license from the Marlboro Town Clerk. And it’s not too deep into NY.
