Wedding Issues - Coronavirus

Laura, on February 28, 2020 at 9:44 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

I made a post about this earlier but I don't think I was clear, so I'm trying again.

I'm concerned about planning for 100 guests and getting 20. Everyone (including myself, FH, and our children must travel). Deposits and such aren't refundable. And banquet minimums must still be met. Most of our deposits are coming due in the next 6 weeks and total thousands. I'd hate to be out a ton of money if things get complicated. No one is local to our venues - literally everyone is traveling (it's in the US but a destination)... I live close enough to drive, but my hotel is close to a major airport where international travel is likely. So are the guests' hotels. And their flights from very populated areas, including California.

Has anyone looked into wedding insurance, or other ways to contain the financial challenges if travel gets dicey or flights from major hubs are impacted?

If you are really concerned then you could purchase wedding insurance but im not too sure it would cover you in your instance. From what I know insurance will cover if the wedding gets canceled or canceled due to weather or if the venue burns down. Where is your destination wedding located?

So just to clarify - are all your guests flying domestically to your wedding location in the US? You don’t have any international guests? I honestly have not even started to worry about domestic travel. I haven’t seen anything yet about domestic flight bans/ limitations. I don’t know if we can predict cancellations from major hubs on domestic flights just yet. When is your wedding?

For context, I’m planning a 120 person wedding on the east coast in May. Same situation as you with tons of payments coming up soon. About 30% of our guests will have to travel from within the US. Another 40% of our guests are coming from Europe (although none from countries that have enacted any travel bans so far). At this point my primary concern is the European contingent, I feel like it’s too soon to make a call on the domestic travellers, who will likely have better alternatives to arrive on time even if their original flight gets cancelled.

We are doing a destination wedding in North Carolina (we live in MN and many guests are coming from here, my FH parents live in NC)... and for our vendors and deposits, the guest count ONLY impacts our bar tab and caterer. And they don’t require the full amount until 2 weeks before the wedding when we would know for sure who is all coming. All the other vendor prices are not based on guest count.

My wedding is in Arkansas near the Wal-Mart corporate headquarters, with everyone flying - except 8 who are driving. So the area would have a lot of visitors from affected areas.

All flights from the US. I think my concern was that I was expecting only 50 - a sharp drop off would have me considering if the big wedding was worth it.

I would consider an affected area to be someone coming from China. I have family coming from Michigan to California next month. I wouldn’t be too worried if I was you. Since everything is within the US Maybe possibly 10-20% might not come but I wouldn’t anticipate 50% not coming. There are always going to be a few that are freaked out & dont want to risk travel at all and there will be some that dont mind traveling if they already were planning to come to your big day.

I would try to relax. I know it's easier said then done. But that's still a lot of time. I think domestically the you should be ok. The other good thing to remember is that the news has stated that the virus isnt as hard to treat as they originally thought.
