Wedding invitations: handwritten vs labels

Samantha, on October 29, 2016 at 4:25 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 26

Does it make a difference whether I address the wedding invitations by hand or use labels?

I've been working on labels the past 24 hours and my future mother in law said labels are not OK and are not proper...

For save the dates...I bought a label maker/printer and bought clear labels to print the addresses on.

But for the invitations, it looks better to have them printed on.

I got my invitations from a shop on Etsy and having the return addresses printed was no charge..just paid a little extra to have them put guests' addresses but the cost was really reasonable and affordable. If you could avoid printing labels yourself for the invites, I would.

How many invites are you sending out? For a smaller wedding I would hand-write the invitations (if your hand writing is good, that is) but for a larger wedding either send them to a calligrapher and have them addressed for you, have the company you buy them from print address for you, or you print directly on the envelopes.

I personally would not use labels.

Calligrapher , I did my save the dates and shower thank yous in hand writing but honestly it's a presentation of you so even me hand writing it I tried to be neat on each envelope, with the time it took me if I did it again I would absolutely of just paid the 2$ a person and gotten them done by calligrapher!

Etiquette wise, your FMIL is right. Hand written or having a calligrapher do them is actually the proper way of doing them. RSVP envelopes and return addresses are fine to print on the envelope.

A LOT of couples will also print (very lightly) in a calligraphy font directly on the envelopes and trace it for a hand calligraphy look.

So etiquette says labels are a no no. But I'm doing labels - it's one of those things that years from now I really won't care how I addressed the envelopes and it's just not worth my time and energy to worry about it

I used clear labels with a nice font for my invitations

We had enough labels left to do the escort cards as well as address our thank you notes after the wedding. The clear labels are more expensive than the clear ones but they were well worth it!

I just wrote mine. I have quite nice hand writing. That may not be feasible for a huge wedding (mine is only about 50 attendees) but I think whichever way works best for you is the right way to go.

Clear labels with a good font look nice and are budget conscious!

I printed directly on the envelopes! If you're planning on printing the labels yourself, I'd suggested just feeding the envelopes through the printer. It looks nicer than labels, costs less than labels, and takes up about the same amount of time. It was very easy and I, personally, think it looks nice. I downloaded a nice (free) font from dafont.com

I ordered mine on minted.com and they printed on the envelopes for "free" meaning they upcharged on other things lol. Either way it was totally worth it and they turned out beautiful!

I used labels and did not second guess my decision in any way.

I'm curious about those who printed directly onto the envelope. Did you have to do one at a time? I like that idea but I also have 80 STD's to send out....

This is one of those weddings areas I think can cause unneeded stress. We are having a small wedding and hand addressing the inventions but using labels for our address on the RSVP envelopes. I know what tradition dedicates but I feel if its going to cause too much stress or you can't afford to send to hire someone to write them for you I wouldn't stress over it. But at the same time you could easily break up the task over a few nights and get them done and keep your future mother in law off your back.

I think printing is fine and looks nicer than labels, but the thank you notes need to be all handwritten.

I think white labels look tacky. Clear is ok, but still on the tacky side to me, depending on the envelope. Most places will print the addresses on for you, thats a better route in my opinion.
