Wedding insurance companies?

Kate, on July 14, 2011 at 1:31 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

My FH and I are getting married at a private venue that requires us to purchase liability insurance for the day of the event. Has anyone had any good or bad experiences with various companies that provide wedding day coverage? The cheapest quote I have found is $95 from a company called The Event Helper. Has anyone used them? I know that you usually get what you pay for, and so going with the cheapest option isn't always the best idea, but I also think that chances are very low that we'll actually need the insurance. Your thoughts?

We used WedSure the quote was a bit more, $145. I can't really say what the experience is, has my wedding is not till October so I have not had to file a claim.

Are you serving Alcohol? We are going with insurance for that reason alone. Also it protects you if something were to happen and you had to postpone your wedding, say for a Tornado (I hope not) or something.

IMO it is better to have it, because when you don't have it, and need it, you will regret it

Do you have home owners insurance? Or even your parents if they would be willing to use their home owners? I had to get liablility insurance with my hall too and they told us to check with our home owners. Most home owners insurance will cover this for like 50 to 100 dollars. I would check with them before going thru a company. Like I said some will do it and some won't, but it is worth a shot!

Brian I think a lot of venues do that. There was a venue we looked, Ford and Edison Estates, they host a ton of weddings, and are extremely popular in the Fort Myers area, but they do require that we have wedding insurance.

One of my brides works at this company and told me they're owned by Travelers Insurance Company:

I'm in the middle of planning my wedding and bought wedding insurance through Travelers, mainly for the liability because my venue required it. If you read your contract, most venues state they will be held harmless if something happens (guest injuries themselves or there's damage to property.) You become responsible/liable once you sign that contract. Wedding liability insurance works just like auto liability insurance; it prevents you for being sued! After reading through my wedding insurance policy I found there is built in coverage for vendor no shows, if someone steps on my dress and damages it, severe weather, etc. It's a really great concept - I have enough to worry about without thinking what could go wrong!

I think the requirement is pretty common. It doesn't absolve the venue from having its own insurance, but the venue doesn't want to have to make an insurance claim if your guests damage something. Granted, it is possible you could get into a "who's insurance applies?" battle if insurance is needed, but at the same time, it's good that both parties are protected.

Our car/home insurance also offers wedding insurance so we went with them. I believe it is Farmer's. We paid about $200 for $25K worth of coverage. I think it is completely worth it & agree with what Elizabeth said. It's one less you'd have to worry about!
