Wedding hairstyles for fine hair? (Vendors welcome!)

Natasha, on April 11, 2010 at 1:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

I have really fine hair(not thinning or thin, just very fine) and I don't know what would work for a wedding hairstyle. I had my hair done for my cousin's wedding and it looked okay, but I don't want to feel like I look "just okay" at my own wedding! Another issue is that I have a round face, so I don't generally prefer to have my hair up. I guess an up-do where my hair wasn't just pulled back would be okay, but I don't even know where to begin. For the veil, I want one that just goes down the back and not sure about a headpiece yet, maybe just some flowers or something or maybe a tiara. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

And here's a picture of me for reference(I don't have any straight-on, though, to completely show my face shape): http://talyn.net/nb.jpg

Also, my hair is a bit longer than the picture shows right now and my wedding is over a year away yet so I might just let it grow out until then and get it cut for the wedding.

I have the exact same problem - the half up/half down style makes my hair look thicker. I have tried all up and I just don't like it with my face shape.

My hair is thin too and I am going with the half up/half down as well. I might get some extensions for the wedding. Not sure yet though.

I was thinking of doing half up/half down, too, but the pictures I find all look like the person has thick hair so I worry it wouldn't work with mine. If you wrapped your fingers around all of my hair together, it's only about the diameter of a nickel, maybe smaller. I have a lot of hair, it's just super fine and always has been. I just hope my girls end up with their dad's thickness because my hair sucks! I hadn't really thought about extensions and don't think I'd want to go that route, but I guess it's at least another option if I can't figure something out.

My ponytail is the same size, do a hair trial, once they curl the hair that is down, you'll be amazed how thick it looks

I have the same problem and I am getting extensions to make my hair longer and thicker. Then I am having my hair styled either half up or half down. My stylist is going to experiment during my trial run to see what makes my hair look the best.

I'm hoping I just had bad hairdressers in the past, but my hair is so straight and doesn't hold a curl well. I look forward to seeing how your hair looks for your wedding!

I'm in the same boat. Definitely going to do a trial run to see what works. My mom assures me that I should be able to have it done any way I want professionally and it wont matter. She has always had very fine , thin hair also but you wouldn't know it from the pics that I've seen! (She was married in the early 70s). So I'm just holding on to that hope!

Hi - I also have super thin hair & a round face. I can wear my hair a little longer and grew it for my wedding a few yrs back. This is going to sound like an infomercial but Nioxin Shampoo & Conditioner level 4 is soooo worth the money. You will see a difference in 4-6 weeks and it makes your hair grow faster. I wore my hair up in a twist for my wedding which I never imagined now I wear an inverted bob with long choppy layers.

Ulta sells Nioxin as well as online stores. If you use Ulta they have the 20% off coupons a few times a yr on your total purchase or buy one get ones a few times a yr so you save and it works out to be around $8 a month for the shampoo. The conditioner (the large bottle) will last about a yr or more!

    Good luck!

Doing a perm or adding color / highlights can add some body to your hair as well. I have baby fine hair as well. A good hairstylist can make sure curls stay in your hair.

If you do an updo like these, you can add "filler" in the bun, etc.

I have the same nasty hair (I HATE IT. No volume. No body. No movement. No NOTHING.)!!!!! I would be weary of doing a half up-half down style because the half that's down doesn't hold any style worth crap! If I curl it, it's flat within 15 minutes... so straight is the only way for me to go like that. If your hair is similar you may have to find a different way. If you find a stellar stylist, he/she can tease your hair to give you more volume but it will have to be all the way up so that's always an option!

Maybe the next time you get your hair cut ask your stylist what they would be able to do for you to achieve your best hairstyle for your big day!

Keep us updated, though, because I have this problem too and I'd like to see what other people have to say Smiley smile

Does curl fall out of your hair when it's been dried straight and then curled with a curling iron? Have you tried setting it in rollers when still damp? Hair's natural tendency is to revert back to the texture that it was dried in. Maybe do an experiment one night with rag curlers or even pin curls. There are plenty of youtube videos and other websites available that show how to do this. Bump Its are a fairly easy way to add volume at the crown. I have a set, I don't use them often, I find that they are just a little too tall for my taste, and it can be hard to fully hide the thing when you have thin hair. But it does work, and stays in place very well.

As far as day-of hairstyles, I can appreciate you not wanting a full updo. However, keep in mind that strategically "placed" tendrils around your face and like the nape of your neck will help to camouflage a round face. Your hair stylist should know where to place some layers in the front of your hair around your face to help.

You are going to want longer pieces around your face, so I wouldn't recommend getting layers any shorter than say your mouth. Otherwise they will hit at the roundest part of your face, only emphasizing the roundness. Sideswept bangs will help visually break up the shape of your face. Longer length will help visually elongate your face as well. Kirsten Dunst comes to mind, and she has fairly thin hair as well.

Another tip that I use occasionally - dry shampoo or baby powder at the roots. It absorbs excess oil that can weigh down your hair, and the powder helps thicken the actual hair shaft, giving you some extra boost. Sorry for posting so much, I get really passionate about hair, makeup, makeovers of any kind... Good luck!

They will hairspray the crap out of the curls - I honestly didn't believe my hair would hold a curl until I had my hair professionally done.

@Natasha - it's not a tacori, but I definitely had that style in mind when we bought it.

I have the same hair...absolutely no volume. I am unable to do anything with it myself. My wedding is outside in June. I am going with an updo. If you dont like the updo, I recommend half up/half down.

You're in Denver? Do you have someone to do your hair for the wedding yet? You have plenty of time, since your wedding is over a year away. So, here are some suggestions. BTW- I'm a licensed hairdresser; 15 years experience. I concur with the pp about Nioxin. I recommend to anyone with fine or thinning hair. Start that now. Also, do not perm your hair, especially if you've never done that before. Perms are tricky and easy to screw up. Start looking at some places that carry what's called a "fall". It's a piece of hair that comes in different colors and lengths. They usually either clip into your hair, or go in with a comb. This can add hundreds of options to your style without the expense and damage of extensions.

If you need/want more help as your date gets closer, let me know. I live and work in Colorado Springs. HTH

Hi All, Just read some of your concerns on thin hair styling for your wedding day. A great option is to have your stylist add some extensions, they work great at giving volume for so many styles. By the way, half up/half down is a great style, you get the best of both looks wearing this, it's a softlook and is very flattering for most face shapes. Also, some other great ideas which were posted, highlights do add volume, Nioxin has great results, just make sure that you try any new products well enough in advance, so that if you have a negative(allergic) reaction, you'll have time to recover from any redness, etc. as well as benefit from the product.

I have your solution, ladies, for fine hair. Clip-In Extentions. They add volume and length. You can by them yourself and have your stylist cut them to blend with your style. Then she can create any style you want, whether its up or down. Plus the extensions are not permanent and you still have them after your wedding day and you didnt spend a fortune on them PLUS you dont have to let your hair grow out. Because we all know that fine thin hair does not look good past your shoulders. I dont know where you are at but I'm in St. Louis and make custom clip in extensions, so ask around and see if anyone in your are does them. If not go buy them and make sure they are Human Hair so they can be curled. I have before/after photos on my website www.hairbychrissy.com if you want to check them out. Good Luck. OH and a great product for getting a fuller loook is Dust It by Schwardskoff. Its like teasing ina bottle!

    Hi Natasha,

If you find a good stylist in your area she should not have a problem giving you volume. You could do a half up and have your stylist tease the top half of the updo and curl the bottom half. If you pin your curls after you curl them and let them sit 20 mins and take them down and put hair spray they should stay all night long. if you do some side swept bangs it should help with you face shape. Their is a pic on my website of they hairstyle I am trying to describe. You can check it out and see if you like it. www.crystal.vpweb.com. Hope this helps. Crystal
