Wedding Hair Worth It?

Natalie, on July 5, 2019 at 3:45 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 8

Is it worth it to get hair done? I'm arranging for on-site stylists to do hair and makeup for the bridal party and moms. For whatever reason it costs twice as much for hair/makeup applications for the bride than for anyone else. I'm getting my makeup done and am comfortable doing my own hair, but part of me says "it's your wedding, get it done right". At the same time, I'm having a hard time justifying the outrageous "bride tax" and usually don't like how my hair looks when someone else styles it.

Will having to do your own hair on the day of stress you out? If not, go for it! Especially if you don't like other people styling your hair anyway. I would just do some trials at home.

Brides are more expensive because their looks are typically more intricate than the bridal party, thus taking more time. I think it's well worth it, but I suppose it depends on the look you're going for and how comfortable you are doing it. It couldn't hurt to do a trial with a hair stylist to see how you like their work.

I totally agree with you on the bride tax! For me though, it'll give me some peace of mind to have a professional do it so that I know it'll stay put all day long. I will also be able to relax more rather than personally stressing over getting my hair just right. Ultimately though, up to you and whatever will cause you the least stress that day!

I agree with Allie, if getting your hair done isn't something you're into, then just do it yourself. I would definitely do some trials just to make sure you're happy with the DIY results!

I would go with what you're comfortable with. It is your day and if you can afford the hair I would do it but I also have finicky hair so it doesn't hold curls or anything unless professionally done. If you are confident doing yourself then 100% go for it. That sucks its more money. My HMUA was VERY reasonable all the hair was the same cost and bridal makeup was LITTLE more like maybe $15-$20 more but thats it.

For me, having my hair done professionally was a necessity... I can straighten my hair but I'm basically hopeless when it comes to literally ANYTHING else lol, I can't even seem to curl it very well on my own.

But the way you are saying you feel about hair, is how I felt about makeup honestly... I don't like how my makeup looks when other people do it, and I didn't want to pay to have it done when I prefer how I do it myself anyway!

Caytlyn's right - they're typically going to take more time on the bride's hair - because it has to stand up to a lot more than anyone else's. We went to the salon to get our hair done, and had two sets of appointments (9:00s and 10:00s). My hair started at 9:00 and I was the last one done - but my hairstyle had to hold for more pictures than any of the other ladies, as well as supporting a cathedral-length veil.

Everyone, thank you so much for your input! I'm torn because my hair style will be very simple; long and loose curls which I style for special occasions. There's just that insurance factor of having a professional take care of it. This company charges $75 for bridesmaid hair and makeup, but $135 for the bride, and that's for EACH application, not combined. I have a wedding coming up next weekend so I'll give myself a full trial run and see how it goes Smiley smile
