My fiance and I had originally planned on not having wedding favors for guests. We’re having a two-day wedding (Friday night religious ceremony with small ice cream social for family and close friends only and Saturday is civil ceremony and reception with after party). We’re trying to cut unnecessary expenses everywhere we can because we’re having a lot of events and remain as money conscious as possible. Maybe I have a personal bias against wedding favors because I’ve only ever received (being brutally honest) useless things I’ll only ever keep because I feel bad throwing them away. We’re already “breaking” traditional wedding rules anyway, but this seemed to upset my future MIL the most and she insists on us having and her paying for wedding favors. I understand if she pays, it shouldn’t bother me, but that money (a good amount) could go toward other things that we would prefer to spend it on. I get we need to show appreciation for our guests, but are wedding favors an absolute must?

    Wedding favours are totally optional.

I am right there with you. Most favors get added to a junk drawer unless you can eat them.
A photobooth or back drop and props are always popular.

In lieu of favors, I am considering interactive things like:
    -A beer donkey
    -Caricature artist
    -Pool Table(s)
    -Cigars

I am very anti-wedding favors! They’re an unnecessary expense and I cannot remember even one favor I still have from any of the weddings I have been to. They’re a kind gesture, but not needed at all. If MIL INSISTS maybe you could get some fun cute cookies for everyone and place one at each setting?

This is a really great idea! I went to a wedding that had beautiful cookies with everyone’s names in icing on them, and they were placed on each person‘s place setting so that they served as both guest favors and “name cards”

Thanks! We compromised on a candy/cookie favor table. There's a new bakery near us that does specialty cookies, so we're doing one of our dog, NYC (where we met), and our college mascot. Those I definitely won't mind having leftovers of!

A beer donkey/beer burro is a tradition that originated in Dripping Springs, Texas, and then spread across the Southwest. A donkey is loaded with a load of beer/ beverages kept cool with ice, and then walks around guests with with its handler so the guests can treat themselves to a beer or beverage. Beer donkeys make great photo ops and conversation starters.

We are doing a photo booth and on the pictures it will say something like "Thanks for celebrating with us"

There is no waste and its also fun to take pictures with props!

No. Favors are totally unnecessary. I spared no expense on my wedding - plated dinner plus open bar for 123, hosted a rehearsal dinner for 35 the day before my wedding, and I paid for fancy brunch for 100 the day after my wedding. And I did not have favors bc I think they are a waste of money!

Oh I did a photo booth but didn’t consider that a favor I considered that entertainment. Totally worth the money!

That sounds fun but I don’t see how it’s a favor. Paying for alcohol is a normal wedding expense IMO.

I'm doing homemade bottles of wine for each person as a favor. Not only is it cheap (and fun for me), I won't mind if I have 100 bottles of wine left after the wedding.
