Wedding dress order scam

Hannah , on January 25, 2018 at 12:00 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21
Hi everybody, I am beginning to wonder if wedding dress shops are scamming people, I am about to order my wedding dress and after talking to several dress places they all act like the dress will take whatever time I tell them my wedding is, so if I say it's in 5 months they say it'll take 6 months to get in, when I told them it's in 8 months they say it'll take 9 months to get in.......so my question is, should I tell them a false wedding date that is sooner then my real wedding date? And also how long did it take to get your wedding dress in?

Most dress places quoted me 6-9 months for the dress to arrive, it depended on the dress itself how long it would come in. I got my dress in 2 days from BHLDN though this is NOT normal for most bridal shops.

They said mine would take 4-6 months and it came in 4 months. It depends on the dress. I can't imagine how it would benefit them to purposely lie about the time it takes to come in.

I think they tell you the longest time to give themselves a buffer. I've not tested wedding shops to try out your theory, but when I just got engaged I went to a bridal shop to order a bridesmaid dress and I told the woman who helped me that I was engaged but didn't have a date or time frame or anything. She just told me I should order 8-10 months out, depending on designer. Again, they tell you the longest and worst to save themselves, but when u dress comes in at half the estimated time, I imagine most brides should be happy, not annoyed.

The shops don't control how long it takes to get a dress. They really have no idea so they estimate a fairly long time frame. Ultimately, how long it takes to get a dress is all up to the manufacturer.

Daughter ordered a Rebecca Ingram from a small boutique, at the end of August, and was told it would be in by Jan. 20. It arrived Dec. 20 (so, 4 months vs. 5). However, delivery time is going to depend on the manufacturer (and whether they stock premade dresses, as David's does for many options, or each dress is custom made after the order is placed). Also, we were told production time might vary depending on whether the order is placed during the manufacturer's "busy season" (possibly late-fall for early summer weddings, and early spring for late-fall/Christmas weddings), but that's super hard to predict. It might also matter whether you choose a dress from a prior season or a brand new design/release. So, there really are a lot of factors that come into play. The shops probably are not just messing with you.... Also, they know a bride is going to be freaking out if her dress doesn't arrive in time for the wedding, so they want to pad the timeline and have you be happy it arrived early rather than hysterical because it's cutting it too close. Also, "rush fees" are a thing.... $$$

Yea idk what store your going to but they are mostly 6-8 months and it depends on the designer of the dress. You can check with the designer, that's the time frame the bridal shop is supposed to be using. My dress has come in a little over 5 months, but this was the time i was estimated initially. The store knew when the dress would come in before the order was even completed.

How would this even be a scam? What are they scamming you out of? All dresses by all designers going to all boutiques take a different amount of time. Some are less, some are more, but most are an average of 5-8 months.

Every time I've asked about a dress at a store they literally type it into the computer and read me the date they are currently delivering into. How is this a scam? By your logic they would seem more like they are trying to get out of selling you a dress than anything, which I guarantee you is not their practice.

    Why is that a scam?

I purchased my dress 7 months before my wedding and they told me they will order it to have it in by the time I needed my alterations to start. I needed 5 weeks for alterations, and they had it in about 6 weeks before my wedding. Honestly, what difference does it make to you when they send over the order to the designer? As long as your dress is on time for your wedding, who cares?

That’s a stretch. Most boutiques allow you to buy fooor samples and go home with them that day.

Well, many designers do impose rush fees if ordered less than 5-6 months in advance. You can see it right on their websites. It's not a scam by the individual shops. If you're cutting it close, go to david's bridal. They can get generally dresses in faster than other designers.

I don't think the store is making a killing on rush fees. Your requesting from the designer to have it finished sooner. Lastly, no bridal shop i went to forced me to buy a dress from them. They all say to take your time and look around. Some offer discounts on the spot to encourage buying, but you never have to feel pressured to buy a dress from any particular store. You can always go back for another visit or go to another bridal store.

I'm a cynic myself, so I hear you. It sounds like you're asking a question and they are changing the timeline based on your date, rather than the dress. If a single shop were doing this, I would consider going someplace else because it's not honest. Otherwise, it takes the time it takes.

Hi Hannah! This is definitely not a scam! Wedding dresses can take around 6 months to produce, because the designers make samples for the stores then create each dress individually after you place your order.

Why You MUST Shop For Your Wedding Dress Early

If you're looking for a dress with a quicker turn-around time, check out retailers where you can buy the dress off the rack! David's Bridal has a pretty quick turn-around, or you can look at retailers like BHLDN!
