Wedding Dress from the Goodwill

Mika, on June 17, 2012 at 5:47 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

I'm a VERY frequent goodwill/salvation army/dav/whatever thrift store shopper. I've found amazing things at thrift stores, most of our house has been furnished that way. When I go in, most of these places have at least one or two wedding dresses which have been donated, but I wonder if people actually buy them? Personally, I'll be going with a new dress, but I'm considering donating it after the wedding, and I want to donate it to some place where I know it'll actually do some good. Do people wear those dresses?

I don't remember who it was, but there was a bride on here who got a beautiful dress from goodwill. It wasn't the typical 1980's puffy sleeves dress you see at thrift stores. She got a sweet deal on it too!

They go for great prices, and I've gotten pretty much every dress I've ever worn to someone else's weddings there, I just didn't know if they actually got used, if they do, I think that's where mine'll go!

I would say some may buy them to do trash the dress. Having said that. I found my reception dress at a second hand store for $15.00. If I didn't already have my dress I wouldn't think twice about wearing it!

I donated my dress to goodwill, and noticed that it was no longer on the rack after a couple months. I don't know who bought it or why, but it is going to some use Smiley smile

I remember a couple months ago whose bride who posted about her mother being generous to a bride who was crying at a good will store because she was getting married but didn't have the $50 (I think that was the amount) to pay for the wedding dress she had found there and wanted to buy for her wedding. Her mother gave the young lady the money to purchase the dress (and if memory serves me she went in and mde sure the young lady did make the purchase) so my take on your question from that is that there are women in need for whom Good Will is a Godsend. that having been said, I would say you will drive yourself crazy if you wonder if your dress is being used for the purpose for which you intended with your donation. For myself, if I decide to donate my dress there, I know I will have to just let it go and not worry about what will happen to it once I leave it. Hoepfully if that is what you choose to do, you can just let it go knowing your intent was to help someone less fortunate.

I've purchased wedding dresses from Goodwill and we've used them as Halloween costumes. One year my daughter was a corpse bride and another year she was a zombie princess. I'm sure the ladies who donated the dresses did not intend for them to be slashed and dirtied and soaked in fake blood but my daughter always has great costumes!
