Wedding dress emergency!! Please help!

Beth, on November 12, 2019 at 7:33 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13
Ladies I am beside myself. I get married in FIVE DAYS and my wedding dress isn’t done. I hired a seamstress that works out of her home that my maid of honor recommended. She came over yesterday to give me my dress and to my surprise it isn’t even close to being ready. She was completely frazzled and the dress was taken apart in multiple spots to allow it to zip up. She took more measurements and assured me it would be done by tomorrow. However one thing that bothers me the worst is that the dress absolutely reeked of cigarette smoke. Like she probably smokes all day long. The odor is so horrible I just want to cry. I’ve called several cleaners and they’ve told me they don’t clean dresses before the wedding. I febreezed my daughters dress (she altered hers too) twice and aired it out all night and it still reeks. What do I do?!?! 😭😭

Ugh, what a nightmare! I don't understand why they won't clean your dress before the wedding. What if it was bought secondhand? Could you tell them that the wedding has already passed so they'll clean it?

Ooph. What a tough spot to be in. I don't know if anyone else would recommend waiting to see if she gets it back to you, but I would be absolutely a nervous wreck if I was in your shoes. This close and she's not done AND the dress smells like smoke?!!! I would go to David's Bridal or another salon and see if they can help you get something off the wrack. Just something to have as a backup plan because you have to go down the aisle in something! Also remember that the important part is you getting married, even though this is absolutely terrible and I'm so sorry it happened to you.

I would look for a backup dress just in case. I would try to find one off the rack that would work. It might not be your dream wedding dress, but at least you would have a dress. If she does manage to get it done, I would probably lie to the cleaner and tell them you already had your wedding and just want the dress cleaned. I'm so sorry this is happening.

Call the shop you got the gown from, explain the SOS and see if they have any suggestions, Industry people usually might "know people" when it's the last quarter and you need a hail mary.

I would go look for a back up dress just in case. Wow that's so unprofessional that it reeks of cigarette smoke. I would also call the place you bought it from to see if they have anyone in house that could clean your dress.

I agree with Alyssa! Call the shop you bought it from and explain your situation. They may have suggestions. Or see if they have a sample you can buy off the rack and have quickly altered by an in house seamstress!!!

They said they’ve had bad experiences in the past. I could say the wedding is over I suppose.

Thank you. I’m the big scheme of things, I am just happy to be getting married but I am freaking out. I may look for an off the rack dress. David’s bridal?

Woolite has a dry cleaning at home system. You put the garment in a bag with a freshener sheet included and put it in the drier on low/ fluff. That might get the smell out. If you got any sample fabric you can try that first to make sure it doesn’t ruin the dress. I’ve used this before with good results on things that were dry clean only. And my mom uses them for her satin and velvet curtains during her spring cleanings.

Yes, I would run to David's Bridal. I am 1000% with you - I would be a sobbing wreck because the dress means a lot even though I know I'm marrying the love of my life and it doesn't matter in the long run! But yes, my mom for her second wedding was able to walk out with a dress that day that was amazing for being off the rack from DB. I've also heard stories of them being able to turn around alterations same day, so I would go and just have that piece of mind in case your original dress just can't happen. Honestly this close with it smelling like cigarette smoke? I would have the realistic view that you need the backup, because you can't go down the aisle in a robe.
