In a garment bag in the back of a bedroom closet is perfectly fine. DO NOT preserve it! I work at a bridal shop and I usually only suggest preservation until after you've worn it. There are usually chemicals used to preserve a gown, which maintain its fabric but if you do it too early before it's a waste of money since a dress usually isn't worn after preservation.

I jumped the gun as well and got mine waaaaayyyy too early. It's in a garment bag in the guest room closet and it's been intact- I check I like once a week because it's so pretty and I can't wait.

Why does she think that will ruin it? It'll be fine as long as it doesn't rain in your closet or you don't hoard animals in there with the dress.

A friend of mine said it will collect dust and trap moisture. We live by the beach.. but its not THAT humid or moist. She also told me hanging will stretch my straps? I didnt have any concerns until she made such a big deal about me ruining my beautiful dress

I have a dress from my first engagement that I am not wearing. It's been in a garment bag for 3 years at my dad's. He checked on it last month and it's still in perfect condition. You'll be fine.

Similar to @FMR2018 I have a dress I've had since late 2014 hanging in my mom's closet in a garment bag - no damage. Definitely make sure it has the extra straps for hanging though as she is right about the straps potentially stretching.

I was told it just has to be an acid free, breathable garment bag and its fine to sit. Mines been in my bag since December and still looks like the day I bought it.

Put it in a garment bag. You are going to need to do alterations next year anyway, and have it cleaned and pressed then.

I ordered my dress very early...less than a week after we got engaged lol. I had it in a closet in the garment bag for about 20 months before taking it out to be altered and then it went right back in the bag. It was absolutely fine. It will need steamed for sure, but as long as it's in the garment bag you're good!

Hey Date Twin! My dress came in April. I put mine between two fresh white sheets closed with clothes pins. I put that into a garment bag from David's Bridal and into a cedar chest.
