Honestly this is why I opted for a reception dress. I will have my ceremony dress hemmed and that will be around $350 after taxes and I'm also having the top front lined as it's see through and I'm not a fan of see through (I can live with it if they can't do it though). The large cost was the bustle...I got a reception dress for less than the cost of the bustle quote. It's shocking how much the dress can add up and I think a lot of people don't realize this until they are on the alterations stand. Good luck!

A friend of mine referred me to a young woman and her mother who do it on the side, out of their home, rather than a shop. The daughter is about to graduate from design school as well.

I went and met with them, and they showed me samples of their work, and I was really impressed. Plus, their prices were phenomenally low, for the amount of alterations I wanted. Yours sounds a bit more complex than mine, as I don't have the lace issue to worry about. Good luck!!

I had a detachable tulle ballgown bottom added, a corset added, different straps put on, a bustle added, I had beading taken from one of my late grandfather’s vests and added to my dress, plus the usual hemming and taking it in. The detachable ballgown was the really expensive part.

WOW!? I had to have the front and sides of my dress made shorter, the bust brought in and the herringbone trimmed down, the top lace altered, a bustle created, and then she had to readjust my daughters dress straps, bring her bust in, and move the entire zipper... and my total was $160!!!!

The really expensive part was having the custom detachable ballgown created and fitted for the dress

See, that's so low I almost feel like it's not fair to the seamstress when you consider how many hours they have to put in... obviously it's great for you and if my seamstress offered that to me I'd take it too. But I do feel like good craftsmanship should be rewarded.

She told me the alterations are actually really fast. She bases her prices off of time spent and materials used Smiley smile she even won seamstress of the year in her city last september!
