I went to get my dress fitted today. Well, the seamstress says it's a reconstruct. I'm devastated. I'm also pissed at the store that sold it to me. It's an "off the rack" bridal shop. I went by myself, apparently I should've brought a friend. The dress is a size 20. I'm normally a 12. Is this normal...

I went by myself, apparently I should've brought a friend. The dress is a size 20. I'm normally a 12. Is this normal size gap for them to sell a dress? I liked it but, I feel like they made it seem like it's normal to get that much in alterations. What is the size difference ladies are getting? Also, how much do most spend in alterations? This bridal shop told me most alterations cost around $1200. That sounds wayyyyy excessive.

Can you return the dress still?

Some shops allow you to "Exchange", where you can buy another dress instead, generally of a higher price range. I hope you can figure this out.

That's what I'm hoping they'll do @future mrs c. They don't allow exchanges or returns. It's possible they may in this case.

My alterations were $250. If I were you, I would try to take it back or sell it. Go look somewhere else on the rack. $1200 is another dress, or a down payment on a car or a honeymoon trip or ......etc. I think you get the point. Most of all, make sure your next choice is what you want and not what you can afford because these pictures are a lifetime. It's the only time in life where it is socially acceptable to parade around in a big expensive dress.

Can you check with another seamstress? My dress needs a considerable amount of alterations. I haven't gotten the final total but was told to expect 500-$600 worse case scenario. $1200 seems to be excessive unless there's a lot of beading or intricate details. Can we see the dress?

I guess it depend on the designer. I'm usually 00, and my dress ended up being a 00, with that being said I couldn't gain a pound otherwise it would've been tight. Where I got the dress you had 2 weeks to return it if I didn't look right
