Wedding Day Lawn Games

Sarah, on August 29, 2015 at 10:55 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

I am getting married on 9.17.16, out in the country, my venue is a barn-like area with lots of open grass, the ceremony will start around 4pm and dinner will start around 6:30pm. I plan on having a "cocktail hour" in between, the wedding is casual (the dress is sunday summer church service-like). I was thinking of having lawn games starting during cocktail hour and last thru the night (I have been to a few weddings where I didn't know anyone besides the bride and it was, well Frankly, it was boring for me). There will be lots of children at the wedding (we are the last in our families to be married and all of our cousins all have 3 & 4 children) our guest count is like 150. What do you think?! What types of games would you like? Lawn Jenga, Cornhole, Horseshoes, Tix Tac Toe...!!

Are your guests going to be in formal wear? If they are I'd skip yard games and let them enjoy cocktail hour. If my FH & his friends started to play corn hole and Horse shoes and got the sweats before a formal dinner, id sit someone else...lol

We had giant jenga and cornhole. Most people played late into the night instead of dancing.

I posted this on another thread; I have only ever seen groomsmen and parents with small children play with these things.

I agree, if your wedding is formal, I might skip it. We're having cornhole and jenga but out wedding is semi-formal and were trying to channel all the college football lawn games since we're both huge UGA fans! But I think it could be a great way to break the ice with some of your guests!

I thought the games may be fun for those who don't want to dance!

Checkers? Lawn games? Honestly, my opinion is that if you are serving cocktails and apps during the cocktail hour, you don't need a single game -- lawn or table top. Adults are quite adept at acting like adults when cocktails and apps are being passed.

For a casual wedding I think lawn games are great. We plan to have what you mentioned as well as croquet so far.

I want games because I think they are fun, we play a lot as a family and it gives those who don't want to dance something to do. I'd like to have cornhole, canjam, lawn bowling and badminton. My mom says I want a frat party not a wedding - fine by me as long as it's fun!

We had a grand ole time and lots of people played, not just groomsmen and children. (Again, like yourself, not a super formal wedding). People also played during the reception instead of dancing. (I didn't actually have time to play, I just went out for a few minutes to take pictures) but there were definitely different groups of people out there all day.

We are doing horseshoes, cornhole, ladder golf, Jenga, and another one I am currently forgetting....like you, it's going to be very casual. Our ceremony is at 5:30 (the week after yours) and we will have cocktail hour 6-7. There are lights that aim out from the barn onto the lawn were we will have the games, so they will be available even after cocktail hour.

Edited to add: Croquet!! I thats the one I forgot...our venue is an old barn/ B&B and when the owners bought it they found a vintage croquet set...we are going to use that too.

I would have so much fun at a reception like this! I suggestion maybe having a table with a few bottles of bug spray though

We're doing Giant Jenga (you can make it for like $30), horse shoe and corn hole. We are having a small Sunday garden brunch wedding with no dancing. We didn't even think of games but our venue coordinator suggested it since we weren't having a dance floor. I thought it was a great idea because if anything at least it will keep the kids busy.

We plan to have 1 corn hole game and 1 giant jenga. Attire is cocktail but there will be a section of the garden for lawn games. If guests don't want to play they don't have to. There will also be an open bar and stationed apps. I don't think anyone will play after the reception starts. I think its a fun way for people to get to know one another and just breaks up the traditional cocktail hour.

Bocce ball, we are hopefully doing a disc catcher. Definitely Jenga.

I think those one can really be a 'know your crowd' sort of thing. We had lawn games for that in between period; they didn't have to be used, but they were there is people wanted. They totally were used! Cornhole and giant jingo were the most popular. Our wedding was more on the casual side; the women were in summer dresses and the guys in slacks, shirt and tie. It worked well with the venue too. If it's a hotel venue or something it might not work as well, but an outdoor venue can work really well.
