Wedding critique

So we went to a wedding Saturday night. The wedding was supposed to be a big to-do, like $20 grand spent on a wedding in a small town. The wedding was at 7pm outside of a plantation. It had been raining off and on, but luckily they had a tent and it didn't rain during the ceremony. But it was humid and gross, and for an outdoor ceremony it seemed to last longer necessary.

SO then we go the reception which is in a tiny bar. It was crowded as hell. Granted there was an upstairs that could have alleviated some of the space issue, but it was roped off because that is where the food (and tables) were and they weren't opening the buffet until after the first dances...allegedly according the sign on the rope.

There were like 14 people in the bridal party so pictures took forever. They finally arrived, did the first dances, bride groom, f/d, m/s, bridal party. Ok food time right? nope.....cont

They took more pictures at the cake, did a champaign toast, and all this time we are STANDING downstairs in a crowded bar. The only food was a cheese plate, fried pig fat (cracklins) and boudin (rice dressing in sausage casing). So finally at 9:15, they open the buffet. So we had to go upstairs which was basically a U around the top of the bar, so where the buffet was located, you had to circle back a tiny space to get to the very limited seating on the opposite side of the U. And the food was cold.

Apparently it was something about making sure that the bride and groom at first? I don’t know. I saw people leaving before they even opened the buffet.

I'm guessing the moral of your story is to make sure that your guests are fed?

Seems like very poor planning on their end. It also sounds like they picked a venue too small for their guest list.

It's a small town and there really wasn't much nearby in the way of food, not to mention we had been drinking for an hour on a mostly empty stomach. Which might have been ok if there was at least seating available while waiting. They could have opened the upstairs and just roped off the buffet even...

    1st- Love boudin.

2nd-Hangry would have been an understatement.

So by the time I eat, I have a headache, don't really drink anymore, I danced some, but by 10 I was done and ready to leave. But In-laws, had told us we had to stay all night, because A) this family had stayed til the end of our wedding (which ended at 7pm, and they were fed promptly when they arrived) B) MIL was staying at the end to help. But we were there til 12:45. I was so annoyed at the end of it.

Leaving their guests hangry for so long definitely sucks. I guess standing up for a long while is not too bad for younger guests, but if there were any older people there, I feel for them.

This is the venue, they supposedly invited 200 people, and expected 150

The buffet was at the top on the right, and the seating was on the left, so you to circle back past the buffet and people in the tiny space to get to very limited seating.

I went to a wedding on Saturday and learnt that I am very judgemental after planning my own wedding. The ceremony took an extra 20 minutes to start because of music difficulties, it was raining and cold(we were under a tent at least). Then they had every one sit down at 6PM and it took over 2 and a half hours to finish dinner(150 guests at 10 tables, 3 courses). The first table was done eating and had their plates cleared before we had ours, there was only 2 servers! I was at table 10 so I was super hangry. We were also still eating when they announced that they needed to clear some table out to make room for the dance. The MC was speaking so quietly that you couldn't hear a thing he said. So much stuff went wrong for such an expensive wedding.

Nothing about that venue looks like it would be a good place for a large wedding.

I've been to two other weddings since mine. While I compared, I didn't feel judgmental of them at all. This last one was bad. The mother planned this whole thing. They had a rolls royce drop the bride off, and drive them to the venue two blocks away. They had a live band that kept starting and stopping for the first dances, the tiny venue with no seating, and starving the guests.
