Wedding costs

My daughter is getting married in August and her fiancee's parents have told the couple that would like to contribute to "half" of the wedding costs. My ex-husband and I will pay the other half. My question is, is it fair to split the costs into thirds, or do my ex and I each contribute 25% and the groom's parents 50%?

    I think if they said “half” they probably mean they’re going to do 50%, and you and your ex would do the other 50% combined. That would be my understanding, at least

    Agree with pps about "half" likely meaning 50%; however, I'd also encourage conversation where everyone is really clear about what kind of total dollar amount they are comfortable with and then tell the B&G to stick to that (or pay any overages themselves). When daughter & SIL got engaged, FOB and I offered them a total specific dollar amount (that ended up being about 80% of the total wedding cost). FOG offered to pay for the photographer of the B&G's choosing and an additional cash lump sum (ended up being the other 20%). From the very beginning, D&SIL knew exactly how much we were all willing to contribute, so they worked really hard to keep within the budget. (They ended up paying for the rings, SILs suit, wedding party gifts, and the honeymoon separate from the wedding budget.) In our experience, dollar amounts are more helpful than percentages, unless everyone has unlimited resources. Good luck!
