Wedding Colors. One, two, fifty? How many?

Taylor , on March 3, 2013 at 8:07 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 26

I would really be happy with just one, but do I need more? Why?

You can have just one but you would start to notice when putting together decorations that everything might be a little bland and boring and monotone. Multiple colors add dynamic. I would choose at a minimum 2. One main color and then another color as an accent to break up the first color.

We had multiple colors in our wedding decor and attire. We did a light blue, a navy and then various shades of light pink, peach, blush and ivory as accents. It gave a lot of flexibility in our designs and they all came together beautifully.

Our main color is egg plant/dark purple. We haven't decided on any accent colors, but are considering orange, yellow blue and pink to keep it from being too dark and give it texture.

I am doing mostly black and white, but have accent colors of pink, yellow, teal, blue and purple. I know its a lot but it gives me a lot to play with which I love since I am a huge DIYer. Smiley smile So go with what you want....if you want one choose one. Smiley smile

Well the "theme," if you can even call it that, is "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" because the diamond in my engagement rings is the one my father, who passed, gave my mother, and I am also using her dress from that wedding. We are getting married in November so I really don't know what else to put with that besides white because it is a wedding. I don't know. I am not a huge girlie girl so coming up with some of this stuff for the wedding is to me. I was thinking baby blue or sky blue if anyone had any other ideas. I am open to suggestions.

    Thanks for the clarification btw.

What Mrs O said. Using just one color will look pretty monotonous, and depending on what color you choose, it could get pretty difficult to match that exact shade through linens, dresses, flowers, etc.

My colors are navy blue and turquoise with ivory and khaki accents. I'm open to using a few shades of turquoise throughout, so that we end up with a bit of a nautical ombré look. We're getting married on the water at our favorite seafood restaurant, so it fits us perfectly Smiley smile

You will definitely need more than one color -- how many is really up to you and depends on the decor and the look and feel you are going for for your event. it starts with the save the dates / invitations and builds from there to include dresses, linens, lighting, floral, favors. gift bags etc. so there is a cohesive design and feel to every thing.

we had a destination wedding in puerto rico - which is bursting with color on it's own. in addition, we wanted an elegant formal wedding... so our color palette was charcoal gray, platinum, and ivory... but then there were little touches of copper and more of slate gray as well.

don't stress! it will come together... i didn't originally start out with a hard and fast color palette, but as we went along i found i was naturally gravitating to these colors and then it all made sense.

My daughter only had one "official" color, cornflower blue. With the floral accents, mainly Calla Lilies, additional colors were white, yellow and green, with a few deep pink flowers in the centerpieces.

Plum, dark red, gold, and some white here

they all sort of came together on their own as we found dresses and talked to a florist.

I agree with the other girls pick 2-3 colors that you really like and complement the feel of your wedding. Then your accent will just fall into place. We are having a peacock (dark teal) and champagne as our main colors but after speaking with our florists have decided to add some soft butter yellows as an accent color

We are doing Lapis (deep purple) and Pewter - I am thinking that the other very subdued color will be a vibrant green. Pobably mostly in my flowers.

I'm a November bride as well, and I love the deeper jewel tones that go so well in the fall. We're using a chocolatey brown and a cherry red to accent the traditional black and white Smiley smile Good luck!

I must say that I'm mystified by why colors are such a big deal. We used a bunch of colors that looked nice together. But they were a bit different at the ceremony from the reception. And we didn't worry about the fact that some things (like our ketubah, or formal wedding contract, which was also the inspiration for our programs, invitations, photo sharing cards, etc.) were not in any of the colors otherwise used.

@2d, I hear what you are saying, but, as someone who has put on many events over many years, color matters.

While guests will not truly remember colors, they send a subtle vibe that enters the brain of guests. Guest may not remember every little detail, but, those details play a part on the over all feel.

I did an event last night, for 925 guests. One minor detail I had were battery operated LED lights under fabric. I cannot tell you how many guests told me that they loved the look of the lights under the fabric. Such a tiny thing, yet it received notice. This is the fabric I used.

I have more of a color "theme" which is dusty, shabby chic pastels. I had a hard time choosing the palette and I definitely don't want anything matchy.

The only place that the colors are going to be is in the decorations and possibly FH suit/tux. We are not having anyone stand up with us and I haven't really got into the decorations yet. I really don't even know where to start with any of that either, but the wedding isn't until 2014 so I think I have time? I got started early so I wouldn't have to stress as much, but it seems I am still stressing. Oops.

    Welcome Taylor.

Do you already have your venue? Can you take any color cues from what they already have the room decorated in? Does your venue come with free colored napkins? You can look at that for inspiration too.

Have you found a cake or a bouquet that you LOVE, maybe that has your pops of color you can use for inspiration.

    Maybe something like this?
